2016 Porsche 911 R: Already a Legend. For Good Reason? – Ignition Ep. 161

On this episode of Ignition, presented by Tire Rack (http://www.tirerack.com), we explore why the Porsche 911 R has become an instant legend. Long before the first one even left the factory, all 991 produced were sold out. The reason? The R combines the 4.0L, 500hp engine from the 911 GT3 RS with a six-speed manual transmission. It uses the “regular” GT3’s medium-width 911 body, but with the RS’s magnesium roof. It comes with houndstooth cloth bucket seats, no sound deadening, and no air-conditioning or radio. This is the purest 911 of them all—and Porsche buyers love purity. Watch as MOTOR TREND Senior Features Editor Jason Cammisa travels to Germany to find out if the 911 R’s driving experience lives up to the hype. Is it more than just a collection of parts from other 911s, or is there some special sauce in the 911 R’s ingredients that make it truly special?

  1. This is the best episode Jason Camissa ever did
     1. great, godly car.

    2. he didnt go way crazy on exaggerations.

    3. kept his persona of "the purist" and all the funny quirks.

  2. So you pull up to a stop light in your over priced 911 r and a Tesla roadster pulls up next to you. Do you put on your directional signal and take a left or right? Do you pause 5 seconds to let the Tesla go 1st? Or do you pop the rear and act like you have engine problems?

  3. There's the Toyota 86 in manual, for the rest of us that want a purist car but can't afford/get a 911R.  Lieberman called it the "best sports car in the world" in a Head to Head with the Miata RF.  Both the 86 and the 911s are practical cars with 2+2 seating and a trunk that you can take to work, to the grocery store, or to the track.
