2012 Honda Odyssey Power Steering Rack Replacement

I had a strange issue with the power steering rack in my 2012 Honda Odyssey. It would ‘rattle’ in the steering column when going over bumps. I suspected a damaged power steering rack was the cause. The van had been in a collision before I purchased it and I think this is where the damage might have occurred.

This video is a step by step, fastener by fastener, account of how to replace a power steering rack in one of these Odysseys. I also cover inner tie rod replacement, rear engine mount removal, and bleeding the power steering system when you’re done with the work.

I hope you find the info helpful and entertaining!

  1. So let me ask you guys this: is this famous ingenious Honda engineering? Because after seeing how backwards it all is made – I can't say anyone at Honda was thinking in their good mind when designing it. And if its like that, then who is to say anything about other brands? Let anyone who will say that throw a stone at me. Honda is same junk as anyone else, maybe a bit better here and there, maybe a bit worse. It's all a wash.

  2. Eric, similar issues with my van, makes clunking noise over bumps, metal to metal contact? Also a lot of play in the steering, a slight delay in turning response…. What could be the problem? some worn bushing somewhere ? No leaks, P/S still works, just some play, and clunking noise.

  3. Hey I think I have the same problem but can I be from winter tires because I just fix my two cv axle a I still feeling the same Think you were talk about

  4. I agree with using genuine Honda P/S fluid. Can you tell us why you only recommend using genuine Honda P/S fluid? I'm trying to explain it to my boss who is questioning it. Thanks.

  5. hello Eric, Ive been watching your videos and always got my questions aswered. thanks for that. but today my Suzuki SX4 2012 model suddenly had a stiff steering and my EPS indicator turned on.

    done some troubleshooting like:
    1. checked for fuse (good)
    2. checked for terminal connector to EPS and sprayed with contact cleaner
    3. did some scanning and the problem said (EPS Malfunction)
    4. Restarted the car but the indicator is still on.

    mechanics verdict:
replace whole EPS module and eps motor. I know replacing it would be best but I wonder if I can still tey some things prior to replacing it woth new one. and i want to save some bucks as well.

    any advice?

Did some research tho. says, it could only be a powerloss from battery to the module. says to check the steering column for some switch or power relay from there. Badly need help for pros like you. thanks.

  6. I replaced the hard, high pressure line on my 09 odyssey last year. Not a fun time getting the brackets off and back in place.

  7. I thought the 2012 odyssey was in the shitty generation that people throw in the trash. Was that a different gen?
Nope it's :1999-2004, 2014-2015 models, and 2018+ (facts brought to you by uh cash cars buyers dot com?)

  8. Just stated working at Honda in Cincinnati earlier this year and l'm doing a steering rack on a 2012 pilot tomorrow. First time doing one on that body style and you just saved me so much time. Honda directions told me to do what you did, but while removing a dozen extra components and to use a engine support and a subframe jack… So thank you so much for the great content.

  9. Great video, seeing the struggles, scrapes on forearms from a pro (with a lift) makes me feel better about how hard some of these jobs are.

  10. Had to replace mount bushings on 07 Dakota, biggest pain was getting the lines tighten. And torquing the bolts down, was on jack stands little room to swing to get 190 ft lbs.

  11. Eric I have been having the same issue with the identical vehicle, I replaced almost all suspension components but that light clunk always stayed. Now I am sure it is the rack, and it somehow wears over time. Also it is very difficult to work on this van due to its tight compartments. Bearing is Koyo 28mm 6001 if needed.
