#ETCGDadsTruck Axle/Differential Rebuild (Part 1)

This is (Episode 5) of the #ETCGDadsTruck Series.

In this installment of the #ETCGDadsTruck series I rebuild the axle assembly and differential in my GMT400 with a 10 bolt rear end (8.5”). This includes replacing the gear set, the differential (with limited slip), axle bearings, pinion bearings, differential bearings, and all seals. It includes all the tools and torque specs you will need. I also show you how to check and set backlash and interpret a gear tooth pattern.

This video will apply to all GM 10 bolt or 8.5” differentials.

  1. I put together my SM465 and to get the main shaft bearings on the shaft, I had.the shaft in the cold garage and I put the bearing in a cylindrical tube and put a heat lamp on it for.30 minutes and they slide right on.

  2. Curious to know .im in the process of rebuilding my rear diff in the 2000 Silverado 1500.its a open diff.i notice the spider gears in the middle slide up and down a bit .is this normal

  3. In the factory 1997 manual it states 90 ft/lb for the ring gear bolts and 60 ft/lb for the bearing caps . At 23:16 in the video you stated 60 ft/lb for the ring gear perhaps you confused it with the caps spec. (Page 4B2-14 of manual) Great video, learned a lot just want to make you aware of a possible discrepancy. Thank you.

  4. rebuilding rear ends is more of an art form..i thought i knew what i was doing and had one blow up within 10 minutes of going down the road lol….

  5. I had the same Diff in my 05 Silverado Z71 4 x 4! At around 135,000 miles I started hearing a little moan from the rear! So That night I put it up on the lift and removed the cover, I could not believe my eyes! The differential was literally cracked all the way around, Yes it was literally two pieces! I never went off road or towed anything heavy, That diff would always lock and unlock when it was supposed to, But they are not that strong!

  6. Can I change the spider gears in there without actually taking the carrier out of the housing. Just curious. Mine ate the driver side spider gear

  7. my carrier will not turn to remove the clips that hold the axe in, but the wheel will turn with a lot of help. what can i do to fix it?

  8. Hey Eric, I’m stuck trying to get this pinion gear out. I’ve been following along every step but this pinion gear won’t budge like yours did. I upgraded to a 4lb dead blow and smacked it for a good half hour but nothing.. any suggestions?

  9. I Am having trouble getting axle to move in enough to remove c clips. have i missed something? PIN IS REMOVED
