How To Remove Wheel Cylinders Without Removing Shoes

This is a trick I learned years ago. It will help you if you need to replace wheel cylinders but your brake shoes are still good. This technique will save you the trouble of having to remove troublesome springs while you get the brake shoes all dirty.

You will however need to readjust the brakes after you install the new wheel cylinder. In fact, I recommend a brake adjustment on drum brakes every time you renew the front brakes.

  1. I have a 93 c1500 Silverado 4.3 6 cylinder, my right rear wheel cylinder need replacing what size cylinder do I need I think my drums are 10 inches.?

  2. When you pushing the two cylinders on the new brake cylinder to see if they move, what if they move but they kind of stick in and they don't move as freely as the one that Eric is demonstrating. I bought two different brands and they do press in one of them was kind of hard to press in but after I pressed it in then it was never hard to press it again but they don't spring back. Is it because there's no fluid inside that it's not springing back? I just want to make sure I'm not getting faulty parts.

  3. Great tip! Thanks!
And here's one from me: by far the best penetrating fluid I've ever used is Kano Kroil penetrating oil. Not sold in parts stores, you have to buy it online. Yes it's fairly expensive. I buy the squeeze can and use it to fill small eye dropper bottles I get at Hobby Lobby– much less wastage than with a spray bottle. It's truly the best, as consumer testing organizations have found.

  4. Damn it Eric the car guy ….there goes plausible deniability. I used to say I had to tear down the whole assembly to replace the cylinder. Its a great tip man thank you. Now to wrestle with the moral quandary. I gave you a thumbs up case you were wondering.

  5. Great video Eric, I was dreading having to remove all the springs and pads but now I don't have to, (thanks to your video) now I look forward to replacing my wheel cyl's

  6. Eric you are a pro. Your videos are precise and up to the point. Great job that you are doing, educating the masses so that they don't get ripped off by the mechanics

  7. Thank you Eric! I wish I could give this tip a "two" thumbs up – priceless, this trick saved me a huge amount of time and frustration with my farm truck. 🙂
