5 Things You Should Know When Building a Turbocharged Engine

If you’re thinking of building a turbocharged engine, the information in this video will save you a lot of headache and sorrow. It will also save you some money.

I spent almost 2 years building my turbo Fairmont and I love the way it turned out. Sometimes though, I wish I had never gone for a turbo. Turbos are great, but they can be a real pain to set up properly. If you do decide that turbo is the way you want to go, I hope this video helps you on that journey.

  1. Im thinking about buying a rear mount ebay turbo charger in my standard 4.3l s10 with adding a cam, high flow oil pump, stock piston's, stock heads summit distributer and a marine intake i got a budget of around $3000.00 what do you think ?

  2. It's high heat is from that small crap turbo lol. If you done a better turbo then on3 like a s475 would have been way better. A/r is the biggest factor on turbos and I can tell by the dyno you did at 2500rpm you are full spool so at 5k your choking the engine which causes heat. If you had it at say 3-3500rpm the a/r would be big enough to get flow.

  3. Dude great explanation. However… Where is the boost controller? You discuss it a bit in relation to the signal from the cold side housing (boost) . Did you change the jets and channels in the carb? Was it leaning out at high revs ? Take it easy. 👊

  4. Seems like alot of extra work and expense when you can just throw a 100+ shot at it. Done properly. Buy a large bottle with your buddies and fill the smaller bottles off it.

  6. if you can, use THE LEAST amount of coupler's as possible. its a pain chasing a boost leak with 13 coupler's, as well as when they get hot and expand, not good to tear one up and possibly suck one into your engine!

  7. The placement of the BOV before the intercooler rather than after makes sense for another reason: why cool air you aren't going to use?

  8. Hey Eric, I recommend you start building undertays, at least for the engine. It will keep the undercarriage clean and more importantly, improve aerodynamics. If you eventually make a full tube and cover the entire underbody of the car, you should see significant gains in high-speed stability. Would sure make for some entertaining videos!

  9. I was gonna crack a joke about how that Fairmont would break down 5 miles down the road, but then you mentioned it's not a real Ford engine. Bravo.

  10. Does your BOV ever open when the throttle is closed? If its signal comes from above the throttle plate, all it will see when the throttle closes is a surge of positive pressure but never vacuum. If you have a pressure differential of more than a couple of psi across your intercooler, it probably opens under boost.

  11. You forgot one of the most important tips. Let the car idle for a few minutes when the turbo is hot. If you don't then you'll "coke" the oil in the lines. This leads to insufficient oil flow to the turbo and then failure. If you can't be bothered to do it yourself, then get a turbo-timer.
