I’ve always wondered what process and what tool they used to do this with. Now I know.

I looked up the tool for cam bearing installation and found they’re not as expensive as Justin said.

I also believe you can rent one of these tools instead of buying it outright.

So if you’re considering installing cam bearings yourself, you can use the information in this video and a quality cam tool to get that job done. Me, I’m going to have Justin do it just because it’s easier.

  1. it's a $100 tool, I do my own. maybe mine was on sale but never had a problem.
    I have brown rubber though so I think it's viton instead of natural rubber
    5lb mallet is just right, but use metal not a dead blow

  2. I have never personally taken any engine I built to anyone to install cam bearings. I’ve always done it myself before and after I worked at an engine machine shop. I see this a lot. People claim to be “professional” or “ASE” certified mechanics but don’t install their own cam bearings. I don’t claim to be professional and I’m certainly not ASE certified but I guarantee I much more experience than most modern “certified” mechanics. I understand if you don’t have your own cam bearing tool but if you build often enough you should own one. That is such a simple process. He just makes it seem like it’s not. I recently bought a new cam bearing installer/remover similar to the one he has in the video. Same purpose, aluminum shaft with 5 adjustable ends and several spacer bands and it was under $300. I’m not bashing anyone I’m just saying.

  3. So, how often do you need to change your cam bearings? If I am just upgrading my cam and visual inspection of the old cam shows no wear on the cam, can I just change out the cam? Obviously, if if you don't have a ton of miles, or rebuilding engine or haven't nicked a bearing during disassembly or re-assembly…

  4. The taper on the camshaft lobes moves the cam forward against the thrust plate.
    Cam lobes are slightly tapered to promote lifter rotation.
    The lifter’s face is machined to a slight convex shape is to accommodate lifter rotation.

  5. Cam bearing install/remover tools are not that much I bought a a really nice one from summit racing for like 100$ I’ve used it for about 3years now and still works like the day I got it!

  6. Why are they going to ALL this trouble for a FAIRMONT! It's a '73 and parts will be hard to find like fuel sender unit, electrical parts etc. They act like it's a drag race engine! The old engine could've been bored and put back to stock. WHO will pay big money for a FAIRMONT?

  7. Recipe to Install at home. Modified rubber expansion/freeze plugs and wait for it…..Co2, dry ice, or propane is your friend here. No 600 buck tool required.

  8. Frische is not pronounced "frish-'E'" it is pronounced "frisha". Look at it like Porsche, most people say "porsh" when it is pronounced "porsha".
