Recommended Tools for the Salvage Yard

**Sponsored Video**I’ve put together this list of recommended tools to bring when you go to the salvage yard. A lot of it is just basic hand tools, but I do have some other recommendations like water and sunscreen. I highly recommend both of those so you don’t end up dehydrated and slightly crispy like I did.

If you’re not familiar with Pull-A-Part, they’re a self service salvage company in the US. They have 25 yards in 12 states. I’m not just saying this, but they’ve become my favorite place to go for salvage parts. I suggest you check them out.

  1. Personal favorite tool not listed…"Dogbone" wrench. Made in metric or SAE it has the 8 most common sizes all in one wrench! I almost always use it a the backup wrench when you find the nut and bolt are both 15mm (thanks GM!). How many 15mm's are in your 101 piece tool kit.

    Also…wobble extensions…lot of wobble extensions.

  2. Went out and bought work gloves today prepping for the salvage yard and expect to go Thursday or Saturday wish me luck I’m hunting for fuses as in are we certain fuses are very hard to fine

  3. Forget the penetrating oil. Just bring a plastic straw. Dip it in the brake fluid reservoir a car and put your finger over top to capture some fluid, then transfer to your application. Saves weight. Break fluid is a penetrating lube.

  4. Cant tell you enough… SUNSCREEN IS A MUST! I was out on the yard pulling a bumper from a truck, I was under for about 20 minutes and my legs were RED

  5. I would also suggest footwear as in boots or steel toe. Also vise grips and try not to go alone it's much easier and safer.

  6. All of the above, plus the following: Long breaker bar. Vise grips. Side cutters. If you're making a day of it and getting lots of stuff, bring your shopping list. Some water. A wheelbarrow.

  7. The last tip of taking the same tools you used to remove your part(s) before heading out to the yard. I would also take aditional different sized wrenches/sockets in case the part you need in the yard is attached with replacement fasteners instead of OEM fasteners the car came with.

  8. hi i work at a junk yard. there is alot of ppl that pull engine from the cars. would like to know if you can make a video on how to tell if the engine is good on not.. i know you showed how to tell about the Manuel transmission.. thank you..

  9. Hand truck or wheeled cart to carry tools box really helps. Row A space 54 isn't really far on their map, but carrying a tool box is !!!. great video like always.

  10. I have the exact same 1/2 cordless impact gun. Ryobi right? It works surprisingly well provided the battery is well charged up. Love it. On another note, what happened to you buddy Camerman Brian? (I pay attention to the credits :P).

  11. Once a vehicle is all stripped down of parts at the salvage yard, do they recycle the remaining metal to make new cars?

  12. Does this yard have tools you can rent or borrow? I travel a lot and can't really bring all my tools with me but if I see one of these yards, I might just want to stop in and browse.

  13. I always do what your final tip is…Take off the part that you are going to replace so 1) I know what I'm looking for; 2) I know how to remove it, 3) I know what tools I will need.

I have also learned that I should always take a breaker bar & penetrating oil (trying to get rusty lug nuts off with just a 3/8 ratchet isn't as easy or fun as some might think).

  14. We need a yard like that up here in the PNW. Funny that everything else up here is high tech but the salvage yards are still luddites…. Only recently brought kicking and screaming on to the web.

  15. I await the battery plasma cutter. All those pry~ee pull~ee things are too much trouble.Need a speedo ? Cut the car in 4 pieces and blow it out of the dash. Much like electrical or plumbing work: The mess left behind is the next guys problem.
Sounds like a political strategy ???
