Stripped Thread Repair: How To Install Thread Inserts

While doing the final repairs on my T-5 Transmission I needed to do some thread repair. Because of that, I decided to make this quick video on how to repair threads with thread inserts. I use a Heilicoil in this video, but this information will apply to most thread insert repair kits.

I get my thread repair kits here: https://www.jbtoolsales.com/search.php?q=thread+repair#oid=1002_1

  1. E-Z lok inserts are better and especially if its a bolt you need to remove like valve cover bolts, oil pan etc👍👍👍👍

  2. Thanks for the video. I appreciate the fact that you get straight to the point and keep it simple yet are very informative. Keep them coming!

  3. To know which heli coil you need for the bolt you have just grab a heli coil and screw it onto the threads of the bolt to know which size coil you need to use. It's a lot easier.

  4. Hello Eric, Love your vids. Could you possibly do a vid on removal of a stripped valve cover bolt. Or respond with what I can do. The head of the T40 bolt is striped. Its really apped on there. I tried to used a basic stripped bolt removal kit. Then I tried to hit it with a dremmell so as to use a flat head screwdriver but wont budge. the head of the T40 just keeps getting worse. Im going to have to drill it out, But how?

  5. Man. I didn't even think about using box wrenches to size bolts! Great video, thanks for the help. You even used the same brand helicoil I'm about to use.

  6. Dude, you lost some weight, lookin good brother! Havnt seen one of ur vids for long time. Great video, need to do some repair on a vintage Suzuki exhaust port, thanks.

  7. "You wanted to put it back to the way it came from the factory" I don't think that you did this. Did the factory use helicoils to hold the bolts in place? Then it's not the way it came from the factory!

  8. The best way to check bolt sizes is to use a 'screw chekr'. I use these things all the time. First, insert the threaded end of the bolt into the hole in the far left of this device. The bolt will just clear the hole if it is the correct listed size. There should be little or no contact with the bolt threads and the sides of the hole. Then try threading the bolt into the right side set of holes until it threads in perfectly. Now you have the correct bolt diameter size, thread pitch, and there's even a ruler on the tool to measure the bolt length. https://www.amazon.com/s?k=screw+chekr&crid=8SLD1TCDLSZB&sprefix=screw+che%2Caps%2C513&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-oa-p_7_9

  9. Your insert tool is actually meant to snap that tail off just keep screwing it down and it will snap off the tail end and you also forgot to tell them that once you put a threaded insert into a whole you cannot get it out

  10. I am in need of doing this on the valve body of my Xterra, unfortunately I had a broken fastener that I had to drill out. How do I know how deep to screw the Helicoil? I would imagine it gets longer while you screw it in place. Thank you lots!

  11. I've rebuilt alot engine's and transmissions and have yet to retread bolt holes but that's about to change I've got a 429 that the timing cover has 3 bad holes and watching this video will help to do it thumbs up 👍.
