How To Machine Brake Drums -EricTheCarGuy

Recently I got a new RL-8500 brake lathe from Ranger. Now that I have the lathe, I’ve been machining just about everything I can get my hands on. This is the first set of drums I’ve machined with this new machine. I’d say the process went very well. I wish I had also machined the front rotors as that would likely have eliminated the noise I was chasing, but live and learn I suppose. Still, I think this is a great guide if you’re looking to learn how to machine brake drums.

I realize that these days machining is hardly ever done. Most times people are just replacing brake components of this type. Though that may be easier, and in some cases more cost effective, machining is still a viable option for brake service. Especially if the brakes you require are hard to find or of better quality than the replacements you’re looking at.

In summary, don’t give up before you start. Consider machining as a cost effective alternative to replacement.

  1. Hi there Eric, I recently installed new ACdelco Druns, however I noticed a vibration when doing above 60mph.. My old drums had weights on them, I'm assuming for balacing, but the new ones do not. in the product description it said they were already balaced, to prevent vibration and noise.. Any suggestions?

  2. What is the purpose of our existence? Is it simply to have a good job, build a family, and enjoy life? Is that all there is? Certainly not. We’re made for so much more. Your purpose is to know God. After we die, the Bible says we’ll face God as our Judge. Have you ever rebelled (sinned) against God? Examine yourself by God’s Law, the Ten Commandments. Have you ever told a lie? Ever stolen (the value is irrelevant)? Jesus said, “Whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” In God’s courtroom, our sins are very serious crimes. They’re so evil that the just punishment is death and eternity in a terrible place called Hell.

    The Bible says that God takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked. He is rich in mercy and provided a Savior: “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Jesus Christ died on the cross, paying the death penalty for sinners. He then rose from the dead three days later, defeating death. Hundreds saw Him after His resurrection; it’s no fairy tale. Wholeheartedly commit yourself to following Christ, and turn your back on sin. Then show your gratitude by obeying His command to be baptized. Be sure to also join a Christian church and read the Bible daily. God will never let you down.

  3. That's a lot to leave on a drum but then again you're not replacing the brake shoes. This video is better than the flywheel video you did. One of the things I noticed you didn't mention and this applies to rotors also once you have set your zero manually crank the machine out to the edge of the rotor if there is a lip cut it off by hand same thing applies to Drums. Because you don't want to be taking a 6 thousandths cuut and then all sudden hit 10 thousandths or more because of that lip. That will break Shear gears or lock up the machine

  4. sadly manufacturers don't have much wear on their parts anymore, case in point: Ford front brake rotor new 28 mm thick minimum thickness 26.5 mm so that's what 1.5 mm wear sadly this truly is a forgotten function except in checking warpage

  5. This is for machinists and drivers who need options to repair their rotors. Great educational video, i did this in high school in the Caribbean.

  6. If brake shoes squeal, put a chamfer on the leading edge of the friction material with a file, at about 30°. That usually cures it.

  7. i saw it a few times but still lost. can you set it up to cut a few thousands of an inch at a time or do you eyeball it and cut very little every time until you get desired measurement?
