  3. Wow. That is some of the most dodgy repair work I've seen, and on an R8 no less! No research done on how to properly secure a frame straightening tool, no block used to hit the strut, leaving a huge gap to just be filled with weld and two shitty plates to 'strengthen' the strut. Just goes to show that any idiot can 'fix' cars on YouTube.

  4. 2 years late, so I guess somebody mentioned it, but that whole welded area doesn't have any mechanical strength. Some aluminum grades are unweldable, such as 7075 and 2024. The welds will crack just after a few days, if not hours. Supposing this is 6061 aluminum grade, on its own it has almost no mechanical properties. That's why it requires heat treatment. So, we can assume the original piece was heat treated, but welding an already heat treated aluminum piece will "remove" the heat treatment in the area of the weld.

    So, the repaired area is now a much weaker spot, but even the other side that was "OK" is now weaker cause he decided to "reinforce it" by welding.

    It's been 2 years now and it's almost certain this frame has failed again.

  5. You're a lil rough mate, why didn't you pull from the farthest distance possible from the crack, like in the on the outside portion of the broken mount/bracket, it's pretty basic leverage physics.

I'm going to let you know now why it was a write off, you can't just reweld structural aluminium, that car required a complete strip and heat treatment to bring the aluminium back up to temper and make it strong enough to use again, what you did was the first step of a process that is much more complicated than you clearly understand and you've now got a car that's no better than it was.

  8. I can't believe that Germans built such a crapmobile. Anyone popping the hood could see that the metal was too thin.

  9. hah, I did that once with the windshield on my first car. It was a 1996 Saab 900 S. In my case I was mounting the ez-pass on the windshield and there was already a rock chip crack in that location that wasn't sealed all that well and it was winter time and the crack just split across. I was pissed!

  10. For future reference: to straighten aluminum of any kind, you want it to be around 350 degrees, not to exceed 400 degrees…. It softens the aluminum and lowers the chances of it cracking!!!
