  1. “Deep community engagement, surveys”

So you’re telling me you polled the communities with the highest percentages of violent criminals by population, and they wanted LESS armed police officers?!

    I’m shocked.
Do they want lower prison sentences, too?
How about a 3 strike program?
    No more bail fees?
More restrictions for legal firearm owners?
    UBI?
    Legal weed?
Ithaca’s future is looking bright. Really bright. Lots of flashing blue & red lights, bright.

  2. This will work great because mental health crises, domestic disputes, and robberies never turn deadly. (Unless of course, there is an officer with a badge and sense of authority to escalate the situation.) I’m not worried about these unarmed first responder’s safety, at all. I seriously can’t think of one instance in which an officer would have to apprehend or arrest someone convicted of robbery. They always go to jail so peacefully if you just ask nicely! Great idea!

  3. While the plan might seem stupid at first, It could theorectially work in a place like Ithaca. At least they're doing it in a small town before testing this on big cities.

  4. This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard of. If you take away police from NYC then that would take away jobs and the crime would be higher. Cops are here to serve justice I mean seriously like this is dumb you don’t take away police.

  5. You have no idea what cops go though day to day. Black people don't call cops because they are or have done sometging wrong.
So a unarmed cop goes to said sean of missing bike and find that the robber showes up with gun and you think thoughs people will be safe? HORRABLE IDEA.

  6. Reading a lot of these comments, it's obvious those of u who DIDN'T watch the video and just read the headline. Smh. Typical.
It's apparent the status quo isn't working anymore. I applaud Ithaca's mayor for thinking outside the box to support BOTH the community and peace officers in a new way. Because we gotta do something , and we gotta start somewhere . Incremental changes are better than doing NOTHING.

  7. Law enforcement exists to ensure justice. That's why they're part of the criminal justice system. There is no justice served when we lock people up for years on end because they put the "wrong" substances into their body. That's an injustice. Some of them need medical assistance or mental health counseling, not criminal punishment. Because there was no "crime" committed in the first place.

  8. Most of the criticism comes from the fact that he is young and obviously a foreigner – I mean just look at that name. Those that lead the world to positive change are always attacked by those with no solution beyond the status quo. His solution may not be perfect but he is putting change on the table and that is important. Good job, Mayor.

  9. You’re fucking delusional guess what even if you use security guards they legally can’t do anything unless it’s a felony stupidity
