Here’s the second installment of Fixing it Forward with Barbara’s 1998 Chrysler Town & Country minivan. In this episode we take a look at the transmission that doesn’t have reverse. I go through my prices of diagnosing the transmission to see what the issue is. Let’s just say, it’s not looking good.
Yes, these vans are famous for transmission problems, almost as bad as Hondas, but we must press on. I want to get this back on the road se we can move onto the next project. There are plenty of people out there that need this service and I’m going to do my best to help as many as I can. Not to mention, the videos I’ll make.

Hi I have 2008 town and country Touring I am not a mechanic I’m just doing at home by myself as soon as I put my car in the drive is shut off but it worked fine on the reverse I already change speed sensor changed transmission oil and filter as well. There was egr Valve code I change that to
Eric my reverse barely works. Works best when cold. Any help seems to do better in morning its a 99 2.4 3 speed auto 31th i believe. Forward is great
What about the same vehicle only a 2003 that sporadically (inconsistent) has transmission issues? Sometimes doesn't go into gear startup. Thanks.
When people operate older vehicles they need to be observant about fluid leaks in their driveway, etc. OR they need to do their own checks of fluids periodically OR they need to have an auto maintenance supplier that does more than just change the oil but also alerts owners to possible problems elsewhere. A leak like he was showing on the floor should have been caught by the owner (spots in the driveway/parking spot) or a technician during servicing (not condemning Eric here). Also there would have been clues to low trans fluid level as the trans probably would not have been shifting properly before it went totally south. These are pretty robust transmissions that will go for huge miles with maintenance. Owners need to be aware if they wish to avoid bigger problems.

Almost eleven minutes to explain and do something that anybody that can fart in a tub of water and figure out where the bubbles came from would have already tried. Are you always this long-winded or did you and your wife get your false teeth mixed up and you just couldn't quit talking?

i have a 2009 vw routan 3.8 my mechanic replaced transmission solonoid pack but do not know about reprogramung do we have to program it? thanks tariq
I have a 98 Plymouth Grand Voyager that will shift when you push the accelerator. Is the transmission no good or headed there perhaps? It is also leaking somewhere above the bell housing but only when running. TIA
Eric's auto repair shop on the Dodge town and country mini van, it looks like you got to pull out the transmission with reverse Out on it. You said you have to replace the transmission but I question your skill level in knowledge it seems like you don't know how to rebuild a transmission based on what you said. You need to go to a tech school and learn how to everything. Including rebuilding Transmissions and engines. Put another transmission from another source does not 100% solve this with you In skill level and knowledge. Eric you need to go back to school learn how to do it.

I think those diamond grip gloves are to keep those hands AND the customers interior clean …… Nothing worse than grease on a steering wheel to make a good job go bad when the clean customer gets back in and gets a new handful .

What could be wrong my 1997 Plymout Voyager 3.0 with my transmission that lost reverse. It engage and move on level ground but slip if there is any resistance and I need to push on gas pedal.
My 99 T&C make the same buzzing sound when shifting from neutral to drive

I had a customer come in to my shop with a engine knock so I checked oil no oil in motor I told the customer she said why doesn't it have oil in it it had oil in it when I bought the car lol 😃

He's a mechanic and he has no clue it takes a special fluid. Avoid this shop

Im probably going to sound like a total dork for saying this, but I really love these minivans. I remember the neighbors bought a brand new one in the late 90s, all spec'd out with leather, V6, heated seats, alloys, disc brakes all around. I envied that thing over our base model Pontiac Montana Turd.

I know that you know your stuff and that you are making a video with the entire process but the color of that fluid should have been mentioned. That fluid color indicate server internal damage. Also i think all Chrysler vehicles use ATF+4
I have a 2000 Grand Voyager which at 160,000 started having trouble shifting. Tech said it was mechanical and tried to get us to buy a new tran, but it didn't sit right with me that it was intermittent. Did some testing on my own and found it was a speed sensor. At 180,000 I had trouble again, and once again a tech said it was mechanical and needed replaced. I did testing on my own and found it was the hydroelectric shift solenoid pack. I'm still running the original transmission at 245,000. The point is, most techs spend 5 min troubleshooting and condemn the transmission, and unfortunately most owners believe them. I'm not saying you're wrong in this case, but it ticks me off to hear you say there's no point in checking the computer for errors or troubleshooting the electrics.
