I’ve been asked about what scanner to buy for some time. Since ScannerDanner aka Paul Danner, stopped by the shop, I thought I would take the opportunity to have him help me out with this question. It is his namesake after all. The first step in choosing a scanner is to figure out what it is you really NEED in a scanner. Once you’ve done that, it’s a matter of looking at the spec sheet for the tool you’re considering and see if it meets those needs. Look for things like ABS capability, even SRS capabilities, manufacturer specific code capabilities, perhaps a ‘help’ database, and if the tool is ‘bidirectional’. Also, for high end scanners, check out their help and training features that may come with your purchase. I know we used a lot of Snap-on scanners in this video, and we talked extensively on their features, however, there are other scan tool manufactures out there that make equally good tools. Paul and I only like to talk about what we know so sorry if this one seemed Snap-on bias. Also, the retail for the Verus is closer to $6K, not $10K as Paul said in the video. So don’t beat us up too bad over that little flub. I’ll post some links to some alternative tools that you might also want to check out that have similar capabilities.

Hello I am looking for the best Bi-directional scanner with the most features, & maybe free lifetime or at least inexpensive updates, as well as help & support for the least or a reasonable amount of money. Great video, lots of information but I'm still confused on a couple things.
For a mechanic who is doing general repair and service work, what differences will they experience using both of these tools in the field? I'm tying to weigh out the cost of a more capable scan tool vs how much more efficient it could make my work, to determine if it's really worth looking into.

I normally like @EricTheCarGuy, HOWEVER this guy is wearing a SNAP-ON jacket and is really pushing the SNAP-ON solution. I wish this video focused on, possibly, open source solutions for DIY at home mechanics who are not dealing with 20+ vehicles.
Please tell us how to use, maybe, a normal voltmeter and affordable alternatives from a guy NOT wearing a SNAP-ON jacket whose drumming up said tool like snake oil.

Consider used Snapon scanners, especially when sellers don’t realize their full value and sell more than one tool at once. I picked up both Modis and Solus Pro running 16.4 for $900. That Modis has a nice 4ch scope. If I were to sell the Solus Pro, my Modis would end up costing $300 or less. It came with secondary ignition probe and low current clamp along with scope probes and the backprobe kit.
The vantage pro is in particular a very nice bargain 2ch scope. It can’t read codes, so its value is far lower than a Modis.
Look for deals and sell what you don’t need. I will keep the Solus for the extra tech I will hire, but could easily sell it.

Any update on scanner new technology?? There is some talk about the Launch X 431 V Pro. I am curious if anyone @EricTheCarGuy or @ScannerDanner has had any personal experience if this tool can compete with Snap On Altec or Matco Professional Features; i.e wiring diagrams and troubleshooting features.

All good info! Do stop by Sannerdanners Amazon tool page – you see a IR thermometer for about $29.00 – thus is about ten bucks cheaper than Harbor Freight/ I use my often and am still finding new ways to use this great little tool!
Speaking on the obd0/1 subject if you don’t remember jumping the ECU connector with a paper clip to count the flashing check engine light than have you ever really worked on a car?

All of the information should be public information. Places like technical schools shouldn’t be the only place you can go to learn the knowledge for a price tag because they have a monopoly on information. Colleges are the same thing and that’s a different story. Anyways Even if it’s your own personal vehicle and you don’t know how to interpret the information you should still get the information with that vehicle you paid all of that money for. If your car breaks down and you don’t have the money to fix it you’ll probably start learning what that information actually means. I don’t like the government stepping into anything for any reason but if I had to pick a few, we’ll then.
