Good thing I never used facebook for anything else than setting up a fake name account to use id with a third party IM. Seemed fishy to me from the beginning so glad my friends all rather use whats-app groups to communicate. Now if we all could switch to Telegram that be neat, open source client and server also promised to become open source.

API Calls and Notifications are two different things. Any application with internet access can have all kinds of "API Calls" for content, Google will never influence that directly.
On the other hand, Android notifications are "intrusive" and could be harmful to your device if they are not secure. To me, it makes perfect sense for Google having a little control about what it is sent throught this service, and it's obvious they will never overcharge for this, since they want to attract more app developers, not to send them away.
Well I don't really understand what this video is about, because Google does charge for API calls.. If it reaches a certain amount.
I wish Android (not Google Play Services, the android OS) had a way to specify your own server for push notifications. If that was possible we would be able to have good battery life by only using one background service for notifications, and not have all notifications go through Google.
A bunch of people in the comments here are saying that what Jayce talked about is good. I hate Facebook just as much as all of you, but Google should be crippling Facebook by competing with them, not blocking them from their platforms.

Every Android/Google service has been replicated in mainland China because they are basically blocked to most users
Mark Zuckerberg has been cosying up to China in the recent past. Maybe he has already seen the writing on the wall. He doesn't necessarily have to re-invent all of the wheels. FB just needs to localise the Chinese services, and maybe convince a handful of people that their data isn't being siphoned off to China, assuming that the CCP has any interest in what every second person eats for breakfast.
