How to replace a Blower Motor Resistor

How to fix a fan that doesn’t work on low. If your interior AC/ Heat fan is not working on low, or one of the fan settings isnt working, then you probably need to replace the blower motor resistor. This video will go though all of the steps and give you some helpful tips and tricks! I also show the blower motor resistor wiring diagram in case you need to put a new pigtail on the resistor (like I did because it melted).

  1. Great video once again Chris. One suggestion i would solder those connections to the new pig tail since you want the least amount of resistance as possiable. I would solder the connections and use heat shrink to seal the connextions not electrical tape that will come apart in time because of the heat from the engine conpartment. Either way great job on the repair video.

  2. Hi,

I bought my Caravan and it came with wind speed 4 not working.

I replaced the blower motor resistor and it worked for less than 1 month, and speed 4 stopped working again, I thought the part I changed could be defective. Then I bought a new blower motor resistor and again in less than 3 weeks speed 4 stopped working.

    The other speeds work normally.

Any suggestions as to what could be causing speed 4 to stop working?

    Thanks

  3. Thanks Chris. My blower works intermittently on all speeds summer and winter, so this video tells me it is not the resistor. Thanks, I'll keep troubleshooting.

  4. Makers secure dealerships get work since car sales alone isn't enough. Japanese car makers (Ford/Mazda collaborate) also make own parts. Defects secure future sales of both parts and cars. Rust happens with moisture leaks. I would add sealant around part where it bolts on. And slightly stagger connectors less bulk

  5. I have a little kid with multiple colored tape. So whenever I run into something like that that's all one color wire I can use the colored tape to label all the wires

  6. Thanks again Chris. I'm doing the same job on a 2002 Buick Century but I also have a 2000 Ranger. Great reference video. Also like the way you explain how a resistor resists. Hence the name.

  7. once the resistor is changed out will i here the fan under the hood click on right now my fan come on when i start the car and don't go off until i shut the car off

  8. Love your video…another good product to use on the actual pins of the connectors is Petrox, it is used to help prevent corrosion and improve connectivity on metal contacts/pins.

  9. Chris, I always use your videos when I have a problem with a vehicle and have been successful until I replaced the resistor and pigtail on my '03 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. Once everything was completed, I tested my work but nothing changed. The fan would only blow in the high (#4) position. What else could it be?
BTW, you're the best and my "go to" when I have an issue!!

  10. I am going to do this by myself!!! I hope it works out okay for me!!! It is freezing outside and my heater decided to stop working today!!!

  11. You Da Man CHRIS, I'm working on my brother truck now. TUBING for what I'm looking 4. Your description of its functions help immensely.
I'm AC n HEAT mech no Auto. LoL

  12. for me its right behind the control system, like right behind where you adjust the air and climate control. so i can take that off and boom

  13. why would they put it under the hood, on my Nissan its under the glove box next to the motor. so it is not exposed to the elements. great video and general howto

  14. You know I like these kind of videos if you have hands-on experience then you can do your own work especially as simple as something like this and you don't get ripped off by a damn mechanic

  15. Chris, you're the man. Great job. Thank you. By the way, for clarification, since the car's wires are color-coded, do I have to match them with the pigtail's black wires?

  16. Your heater video popped up on my suggestions…I figured my blower motor doesn't work and my parents blower motor resistor (I had no idea what that was until I watched your other video) was shot so I watched it and it lead me here.

Your videos are great! Thank you for making them!!

  17. Thx. Chris, great video. Helped me get my fan working again on my '99 Ranger 4.0L. Just wish my hands weren't so darn big. This would have been even easier!

  18. When chrisfix said “I don’t know why they can’t just design something better” about Ford and Mazda. That hit lol. They make some really easy tasks really difficult. Ford more so (just personal experience). But removing a fuel filter or MAF sensor or even trying to remove anything from FORD is SO HARD
