Every once in a while you run into a fuel gauge that just doesn’t read correctly. When I run into this problem I usually go looking to the sending unit in the tank. I’ll admit that it’s not always effective but at least for me, the odds are good that’s where I’ll find the problem. In addition to that, I usually find that all I have to do is work the wiper arm and check the resistance and I find that’s all I need to do and it works again. That may not be the case for you but it’s at least worth a try since it doesn’t cost you anything. In addition to learning how to test a fuel sending unit you also get a look at what’s involved in removing the fuel pump in this vehicle. It’s good information should you find yourself in need of replacing a fuel pump on a full sized Ford like this. Here’s some useful links for you.

Let's say your fuel gauge it's reading empty all the time. it used fluctuate back and forth first and now reads empty all the time.
Sending unit is good so what would be your next step? Before checking or assuming is the gauge itself .

At 23:10 — the sender isn't grounded. Fuel gauge sees open circuit, which it translates to full tank.
Ground wire is still corroded I haven't been able to find where it leads to i have a 2000 Grand marquis battery voltage drops and won't charge unless I mess with the ground wire
Can a bad ground cause this issue my ground wire from battery to engine is burnt up and corroded when my battery died before my fuel level worked and stopped working when I replaced battery and alternator

When I worked in a police department as a fleet mechanic if you ever have a fuel pump sending issues on a box you start it and let it run till its out of gas add a gallon or 2 back reprime put on lift and a lot less gas shower
Hey, Eric! I have a 2009 Ford Taurus. The gas gauge will read half full right after my wife filled it up with $39 of gas! We'll turn it off. Turn the car back on later and the gauge will read higher than half but not full. We may turn it back on and it will go to full. Th gas gauge varies on the readings. What may be the issue with this please? The gas gauge WORKS, to some degree. We would just like for it to always show the correct reading!!! Thank you VERY much!
Just got a 2008 Grand Marquis that was reading 1/4 of a tank even though it had a full tank (last car, 05 Crown Victoria did it too). I put two bottles of "Techron Concentrate Plus Fuel System Cleaner" in the tank, and drove around for about 10 minutes. Problem solved. I didn't think it would work, but it did. Both cars I've had were owned by senior citizens, that most likely had something to do with it…. (both cars were previously driven less than 300 miles a month)

Act the same way no difference… act all wierd don't read correctly and sometimes it read e with gas light on then creep up to where it should be.. what's wrong?!? I can't figure it I checked fuse and looks fine
