Sliding Door Repair 2001 Honda Odyssey -EricTheCarGuy

If you have an Odyssey that has issues with the doors opening and closing this might be your fix. Sometimes the roller assemblies go bad and cause issues with the doors opening and closing on the Honda Odyssey. This video shows the step by step of the removal and replacement of the rear hinge/roller assembly on the Honda Odyssey. I also touch on the operation of the motor and how to set the cable tension on the mechanism. I believe this is a common problem with these vans and the simple test shown in the video will tell if you have this issue. Hope you enjoy the video. Here’s some useful links and info for you.

  1. Jesus watching you tackle these jobs is very funny but very insightful both sliding doors on mine the bearings are smoked the body panel is scratched all the way down..i will attempt to do this job after this brutal buffalo winter..the sarcasm. Is enough to make me want to get it done at least on 1 side

  2. Great video! I'm having a little different problem, wondering if you've seen it. I'm trying to fix up a 2002 odyssey that was passed down to us from family. Sliding doors weren't working well, and I noticed that the front contact pads (mounted on the pillar) were crushed / plastic behind the buttons broken out. Got the Honda OEM parts and replaced them both. The passenger side works great now, but the driver's side door doesn't function at all. The slider moves manually, but won't open or close from buttons or key fob. If I hit a button, the van beeps 3 times and nothing happens. The door open indicator on the dash is working properly. I went through the instructions for reset, pulled & reinstalled fuses 1,5, and 13, no luck. Checked the little microswitch installed under the door frame, and it appears to be moving correctly. Have also noticed that now when I manually close the door it locks and I have to reach in and hold the door lock in the open position to manually open the door.
    Any tips?

  3. I don't have this 2nd Gen Honda Odyssey but after watching this, I believe that Honda owes every Odyssey's owners the door roller part for free. Clearly, the plastic roller is no match for the duty cycle required for these powered doors. These rollers are under engineered and they should be metal with ball bearing to take the daily abuse. To make the matter worse, to replace these poorly design rollers, you literally have to tear apart the interior panel to get to the door motor and the cable tensioner. For people who is not mechanically inclined, the dealer could easily charge 4 hrs of labor plus part which in my area, you are looking at $600 per door. There should be an access panel just below the speaker so that you can access the door motor and the cable tensioner to release the door cable tension. This way, the 4 hrs job could be just an hour or so, making the car problem serviceable in a reasonable time. I have the 3rd Gen Odyssey and the design is similar for the powered doors so I wonder how long until my powered door start to fail, particularly the passenger side. I can certainly replace the door roller with similar process but I think that Honda is failing miserably in this case, both on the poor door roller design and the cumbersome serviceability of a common problem.

  4. Hello Mr. Eric.
I have a Honda Odyssey 2001, the power of Radio/ CD on but NO SOUND to the speakers. I check the fuse box and the fuse ( interior lighting/ Radio still okay) can you tell me what else I need to checkout.
    Thank you very much.

  5. So, can you fix the hinge without taking the van apart? My 2000 Odyssey has this issue…. Mine acts like it's having a seizure. And then gets stuck mid way. Took me 25-30 minutes to lift it and push it closed. Because the hinge kept moving where it got stuck hitting the van…

  6. Fantastic video! After watching this I replaced both of my door hinges in a single afternoon. I spent about 4 hours on it. Parts cost me about $180. I am supper pleased. Thanks Eric.

  7. You don't need to take out all the inteor paneling out just pry the top of the panneining so you can put your hand in there to loosen/tighten the cabel

  8. Make sure the seats are fully latched in because if the seats are not latched in and someone reaches over the seat it can collapse and the person might get stuck and suffocate to death or the seat might crush them to death.

  9. Great vid and very detailed. I have to replace my sliding door motor on both sides but I’m going to replace the engine and trans mounts first.

  10. My driver side sliding door doesn't close all the way in and the door light/buzzer is on when I drive it. I checked the lower switch, latch, roller, electrical contact, guide and cable, nothing wrong with them. I'm thinking to adjust the cable tension thru the pulley to solve the problem. If I push the door while it's closing, it will eliminate the door light and buzzer.

  12. It’s 2019 and the video is still going strong! Hopefully my Y2K Odyssey will be going strong, too, after getting a much-deserved door tune up. Great tutorial, thanks for making it!

  13. That is a lot of work to get all the panels off. Thanks for the info but I will pay the dealer to replace rollers.

  14. Video way to long for the job. Could have replaced roller Assembly in same amount of time to remove seat. Seat not needed to come out. If yourthe owner you should have a Haynes manual. And did a YouTube search.
