Repairing A Broken Air Compressor -EricTheCarGuy

While cutting the torque converter in half for the Torque Converter Dissection video I killed my air compressor. In the defense of Campbell Hausfeld this 26 gallon compressor was never designed to run continuously for 2 hours and that’s exactly what I did to it. Now I know it’s limits. At some point I hope to get a larger 60 gallon which I think will work much better for me. Thing is a 60 gallon compressor uses 220v and in my shop that may be an issue. For now I’m happy to have my 26 gallon back. I don’t plan on cutting any more torque converters in half in the near future so I should be good. I’d like to thank my friends at Campbell Hausfeld for hooking me up with a new motor/compressor assembly, it made my life so much easier. Here’s some links you may find useful.

  1. Looks like you should've done a lot more planning before you started this project! LOL
Ducktape? subaru parts? This was entertaining…

  2. I came across this 7 yr old video at just the right time.
I have the exact same compressor and it just quit on me. Now I have some knowledge going in there.

  3. I just wondering if it might help out just a little bit if you put a few drops of oil like you do your air tools you put a few drops of oil in them to make them work better I just wonder if we should do that to your airless compressor every now and then

  4. That tape t h a n g is always confused me I think the main thing is trying not to when you screw it in try not to unravel your tape

  5. I bought a 20 gallon 5hp compressor from a local auction house and it's only building up to 20PSI and it's missing the air filter (inlet was caked with dirt/dust almost to where it was fully closed).

I just need to diagnose whether it's the reed valve plate or the piston/piston ring, but since it builds up a little bit of pressure it could be one of the reed valves. There's also a leak in the pipe coming from the electric box to the motor, so I gotta see if that's not supposed to be there and hopefully it's something I can fix for free whether I need to plug a crack, replace an o-ring (which I have one from an oil filter box), etc.

  6. I have an air compressor exactly like that and had same issue
It was inside two year manufacturers warranty so got it fixed free 🙂

  7. I have this same air compressor… All the stickers and logos had been taken off though, so for quite a while I was trying to figure out the brand and model # etc.

Anyway, yesterday I come outside to use it and it's not working. I open up the top to see that the Piston rod had been snapped in half. Do you know where to possibly get a replacement ?

  8. I just bought a new air compressor and it's my first air compressor ever. When not in use, should I release all the air out of tank or leave it in, any advice?

  9. I used this air compressor when I first got it .>>>>ur2.pl/1018 Worked my impact wrench just fine. The other compressor I had sometimes it would and sometime it wouldn't. Used it four days later and the thing still had a full tank of air. the other one would have lost pressure in the same day. This thing so far was one of the best investment I've made. I love this thing.

  10. I'm surprised Campbell Hausfeld didn't want you to post a link back to their site so that they could sell more of the compressor assemblies that your are installing. Do they even sell this piece by its self?

  11. Pack rattiness is an affliction suffered only by guys that make and fix things; it seems people that never fix things but have others do it for them have no trouble throwing out things, because they can't imagine what possible use they would have.
On this repair, I wonder what the cost ratio was, of the replacement pump assembly vs. the toss and rebuy method.

  12. it's a bad day when your air compressor break, the reed valve on mine cracked in half and I had to make another out of a feeler gauge

  13. The way I found to remember how to put on Teflon Tape is if the threads of the Fitting, Pipe etc. is facing you the tape goes Clockwise, and if the threads are pointing away from you, Counter Clockwise! By The Way Hold the fitting pipe, etc. and move the tape around the threads, makes it easier to Tape!

  14. Plumbers Tape: The mistake you are making is that you are holding the fitting stationary and are moving the tape around the threads. The trick is to do the opposite. Turn the fitting in your hand in the direction to tighten, and allow the threads on the fitting to pull the tape onto itself. This guarantees that the tape is applied correctly, and will be pulled tight as you install the fitting.

  15. hey Eric , after all this work why didn't you replace that drain valve with a decent ball valve and remote it so you don't have to get on your knees

  16. For the drain valve, I use a street EL and a quarter turn ball valve. Makes draining quick, easy AND knuckle buster free !
