Replacing a Subframe and PS Rack 1999 Pontiac Grand Am – EricTheCarGuy

I pulled this one out of the past from about a year ago. The rack had broken loose from this sub frame and as a result the rack AND the subframe needed to be replaced. I hated the lighting in this but at least it gives a good overview of the process.

  1. Thank you Eric was having a hard time reinstalling my subframe back. Did it the same way you did both jacks and some blocks took my time bam bolts started to line up. I ended up dropping trans cause i thought my flexplate cracked. Installed new one after saw old 1 was fine smh. So i took my time spray painted the trans brilliant silver. Come the find out it was the darn hormonic balancer!! Overlooked it but it has rubber missing all around it grrr. It was knocking at idle then stopped after some rpms. 3800 series 2 187k. Go jo my best friend

  2. 2004 grand am Sloppy steering column and everything is all good but can it be the steering knuckle or the universal joint and could the be adjusted

  3. hey Eric love your vids .. So I have a beautiful 1996 Chevy Beretta with 36,000 miles and this thing looks like it was bought in 1996 yesterday with the same problem as the car in the video and I took it to two shops here in Chicago and one told me to junk it because they don't make parts for it any more the other shop told me to take it to a collision shop which I didn't do yet but would that same Subframe fit my Beretta or do you know which one would because I can't take another shop telling me to junk my car please help and thanks.

  4. That's a lot of crawling around on the floor, I've got a 2001 Bonneville. The Rack literally broke off the mount on one side, do I need to drop the sub frame to R&R the rack n Pinion?

  5. I see this is from a long time ago the other day I heard a pop on my 2002 Grand Am now I got 30 degrees of play in my steering wheel and the rack is moving all around

  6. You young guys just dont appreciate your good health, maybe you do idk, great video i would modify that rack that holds power steering beef it up as it were.

  7. So I'm going to be working on a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero, has a busted subframe and streeting rack, would welding the subframe back together be a good idea until I can get one? The guy I'm doing the job for only needs the car for a short time till he gets a new car.

  8. How do you know if a subframe needs to be replaced? I was told by a shop that it had a "crack" in it, but was fine and didn't need replaced. He showed me the crack, which to me just looked like a small chunk out of the very top part that is immediately below the PS rack. 2002 Cavalier 2DR 2.2l OHV Automatic. They basically said I would be fine for a couple of years but to just keep it in mind if I kept the car longer than that?

  9. To prime Power steering after parts replacement you lift the front tires off the ground, disconnect the two wire assemblies that are connected to the ignition coils, then with one hand holding the key to start position and one hand on the steering wheel you rotate the steering wheel so the tires are turned to one stop then the other stop about twice while the engine is being cranked over, then stop. check your fluid level and add as needed. Then wait several minutes and check to see if there are no more bubbles, you might have too repeat. Don't forget to plug the electrical wires back into the coil. you should be done at this point.

  10. this same method can i work on my pontiac sunfire and do i have to have something holding my engine and im doing the same thing to my pontiac but my question is will i have to told my engine with some thing else before going or droping the whole thing down if u can help plz im just was to know before i do anything with that and before i do a mistake that can cost me tons of money that i really dont have ????

  11. I recently discovered some bad subframe rot on my 2000 dodge neon and am wondering, how much would it cost for a shop to replace a subframe as I can not do it myself. Thank you

  12. I feel this was a very good video on replaceing the sub frame, (K frame),  I found this video very easy to understand when he was explaining what he was doing and showing us.  Thank you

  13. thank you very much, much  info , one question if I'm just replacing the rack and pinion do I need to drop the subframe?

  14. Eric,
I've been working on ml350 2003 steering rack removal. So far I couldn't get it out. I think I have to lower the subframe bcz after all the see saw, twist, turn, snake, everything and I still couldn't get the rack out for 4 days now.
There are 4 bolts from the subframe to main frame. And 3 tranny bolts to the subframe (2front 1rear). Also the lower control arms and tortion bars are connecting to rear sub frame. After I loosen the 4 bolts from sub to main, there are no movement of dropping down. Even I pried it down.
Do I also have to unbolt the 3 bolts from the tranny?
How do I lower ghe subframe a little bit?
    Thanks Eric!

  15. With the quality of most reman power steering pumps and racks vacuum bleeding using OE power steering fluid is the way to go now days. After all the trash (fine dirt to tobacco size stuff) that I've flush out of reman pumps  from autozone and orielllys that was A1 carDONE junk that they label as there house brand It probably not be a bad idea to flush before even installing, I used a drill with a allen bit to flush all the stuff that is in it either because they are so dirty and nasty at the place they do it or that's the additive package they include with the pumps to ensure the rack fails next because A1 Cardone insist that you use a filter or it may void warrant, ACDelco says not to use a filter.

I had the rack on my 95 escort break its mounts that keep it from going side to side but I got used to the half turn of play in the steering wheel pretty fast until I got around to fixing it.

  16. Keep in mind,  you have to turn it the same direction the engine would turn it with the belt attached,  and you'll still turn it lock to lock about 10 times slowly with the key on(engine not running)  but in my experience that's the best way.  I'm about to do one this weekend,  and I was researching for the location of the rack.  Thanks to you,  I'll just pull the subframe!!   Love your videos bro,  keep it up!
