Thrust bearings are not something that you normally have a problem with in fact if you do it will most likely be on a vehicle with a manual transmission but it’s good to know what they do and what happens if there’s a problem with them. I made this video to cover what thrust bearings are and what their function is inside the engine and a little about what happens when they go bad, I hope you find this information helpful should you experience any of the symptoms covered in the video.

  1. My 94 Honda prelude starts up but when it warms up and I push in the clutch to shift it shuts off and I was told it was the thrust bearings so I have to take the engine apart and fix it just don’t know which ones fit

  2. I have a question would bad thrust bearing cause thumping when engaging into each gear, feel it most in 1st and 2nd? I have new clutch, innovative mounts and poly suspension bushings lmk thanks

  3. I always thought thrust bearings had physical ball bearings within them. I thought these u are talking about are thrust washers. Since theres no physical bearings there more like shims

  4. Thanks bro. Practicing for my ASE P2 test and didn't know what theses were or what they did. Loved that you also explained the diagnose on it.

  5. What about automatic I think this may be the culprit for my sensor going out it's happened twice already maybe a bad sensor I dont know any tips on how to check it

  6. My mechanic just said the my crank shaft moves back and forth. How big or how far does it move? And how bad is the situation? He did say that the trust bearings needs to be replaced.

  7. I had no idea what that metal bit was, but this video cleared that right up. One of these bearings wore down a groove in the main bearing cap and then dislodged to the point it seized my engine. I'm stubborn AF, and I like to fix things so I took the whole engine apart to find that. Daily driver, oil level was good, recently changed…

  8. Can worn thrust bearings in my 98 Safari van be the cause of my serpentine belt continually being spoiled and squeaking and having to be replaced?

  9. I would imagine that the extra slop in the rotating assembly would cause a lot more damaging harmonics/vibrations as well? Could damage the block and crank eventually I would imagine. Particularly in a high RPM application

  10. Didn't really understand what Flying Miata was talking about in the description for their clutch switch override until just now. Thank you for your service!

  11. What design changes have been incorporated into engine design to beaf up the added thrust bearing demand and lack of lubrication to the bearings since the mandatory clutch engagement was mandated for engine start-up? Also, what's the average life expectancy of thrust bearings since that mandate was imposed and how does it compare to the previous design?

  12. Then why prepare thrust washer/bearings with a softer material and risk the lateral wear and lateral movement of the crankshaft ? Why not use a high end alloy for thrust bearing?

  13. No crank no start on a manual transmission, where you're forced to press the clutch for start, then just bypass the switch on the clutch pedal, it's only two wires.. If it cranks over then there's your problem, a binding crank. However, I've personally never encountered this problem before, not saying it can't happen I've just never seen it.

  14. if i found one in thrust bearing in oil pan on the other is still in block can i fit them back in when rebuilding and it will be ok

  15. i have a triumph stag v 8 its noking taken engine out their is movemeanth side to side and found tiny piece metal in sump could big end shells b ok and would thrust bearings cause a nock
