The viewers have chosen and this weeks video will be about solving Honda idle problems. I’m really not surprised as I get a lot of questions and requests about this very subject. Here are the links I promised in the video that will help you address specific issues mentioned in the video.

How To Bleed a Cooling System

How to Check for Vacuum Leaks

Reading Check Engine Light Codes

Diagnosing an Overheat

Hopefully when your done checking all that stuff out you will have solved your Honda’s idle problem, if not leave a comment or send me a message and I’ll see what I can do just make sure you have tried all the stuff in the videos first as that saves me from typing so much.

I also want to add my “Idle Speech” into the mix here: http://www.ericthecarguy.com/forum/8-Service-and-Repair-Questions-Answered-Here/41475-solving-honda-idle-issues-rough-idle

There are a lot of things that can contribute to an idle issue, in fact in the end it may still be there to some degree because of the nature of that engine however here are some things to start with.

First start with a good tune up, use NGK or Nippon Denso plugs, don’t change the wires if they are OE, if they aren’t OE you might consider NGK wires as they are very good and less expensive then OE.  A quality cap and rotor should be good.  A new air filter also helps.

Don’t change the PCV valve, if you see an aftermarket PCV valve in there put a Honda in, believe it or not I’ve seen idle issues caused by aftermarket PCV valves, the OE’s last just about forever so you can easily justify the expense.

Next a good valve adjustment, this goes a long way to smooth out the idle if done correctly, mess it up and things can get a lot worse though.

While you have the valve cover off check the timing belt tension, if you feel a lot of slack this can cause the cam to ‘chunk’ as it spins causing a rough idle.  If you think the belt has been on there for some time then you might consider changing it and resetting the tension properly, if it’s not ready for replacement you can reset the tension to take up the slack.

DO NOT adjust the idle screw under any circumstances, it is set at the factory and that is the reason it was sealed in the first place. If you find that the seal has been broken and you have a low idle and you have done all of the above then you might turn the screw out a little to see if that helps the idle but only enough to try and bring it back to where it was before it was adjusted in the first place.

Last clean the screen in the Idle Air Control valve, this can get clogged up with carbon over time and cause the flow through it to be restricted which can cause idle issues.

If you still have a ‘rough’ idle after all of this THEN look to the engine mounts as you want to be sure the engine is running correctly before you go for those as the one in the back is a real pain to replace.

  1. Question, I have a new IACV installed, done with the ECU reset, done adjusting the FITV, now my problem is, when I will start the engine aircon off the idle is to high around 1500, and when my aircon is on, the rpm will drop and drop until the engine will stall. What might be the problem of my civic? by the way my civic is a 1995 honda civic ESI with d15B engine on it..

  2. Articulate and well expressed…more like an Oxford Professor. I am sure that this is the issue with my '85 Prelude but I can't loacate the valve!

  3. Now 10 years…lol…I helped a girl buy a 91…she lives and works in Palm Springs area…Indio…hot!!! She runs A/C…IT DIES AT SIGNAL…I told her stop running the A/C …dang…Im over 100 miles away…hard…she is a knuckle head too…yikes…TY…GREAT TIPS…#2 I will put money on that valve…as soon as I get down there…I can mess with it…yup…THANKS ERIC…

  4. I'm going to show this to my mechanic because he cannot figure out What or how to fix my idol.
I took it to auto zone and it is reading Clean throttle or adjust throttle.I also think he wants to change idol control valve.
I honestly think he just wants my money. Thanks so much for sharing this video I really hope it helps.

  5. i am currently having this issue. 2003 honda crv 2.4 UK manufactored model. things ive tried, 1)purchased the $300 oem iac , 2) iac relearn procedure 2sec on, then 3k rev for 10 without any load, 3) removed the ecu/pcm fuse for 5 min then replace and tried the relearn again, 4) check for vacuum leaks, 5)replaced the pcv incase this was the issue. i initially removed the old iac cleaned it and installed with no luck, this is why i bought a oem replacement. One thing i’ve noticed, when i erase the p0505 code with obd scanner, the crv idles perfect until driven and the check engine light comes back on. hopefully you may have some insight. thank you in advanced

  6. Dude I think you are the shit, trade school instructors do not make things as plain as you do you are missing your calling you should be teaching this for a living and not just on video thank you for making mechanics even better than they are especially me keep up the good work while I keep staying dirty

  7. Dude just found you. Thank you. What a cool guy. Appreciate your help. I'm gonna try some stuff out and I promise to not throw money out until I diagnose the problem!!

  8. Thank you so much! One day after work my Odyssey started surging while idling and even when driving, I was a bit nervous but thankful for your video!

  9. Mine is idling at 2200 rpms and wont go up no more and i just bought the car but i just started measi g with hondas so im not good with then thats why im asking you what maybe it could be

  10. Could a bad MAP sensor also be the cause of a rough idle? I was thinking about replacing mine on my '96 Civic.

  11. We replaced part after part and still no success. Now I'm being told we need to change the PCM….so now I'm wondering if my car will go over 30 mph if I change it??? Super frustrated! Never buy am AS IS, …just walk to work!

  12. I have a high idle and check engine light for IACV and primary O2 sensor so I replace those 2 and still have high idle, then I fix vacuum leaks on the injectors, change pcv, TB gasket, electronic load detector and still high idle driving me nuts.

  13. I surprised myself, all because of the confidence you gave me in several of your videos. I did all of the spark tube seals on my wifes 92 accord because of you. Looks like low coolant is the culprit today. You're a gem Eric.

  14. I just replaced my iac because I had a idle that was up and down up and down. The new iac is giving me the same problem. It will idle up to 2k rpms and back down and back up. What could the cause be? Is the new iac I just put on defective?

  15. hey what happened with your joy and dynamism to explain the problems with the cars !! let's go back to your joy !! you have helped me a lot in my cars !! come on, friend!! and where is the beer !! smile friend come on !!
