Replacing a Distributor, Acura Integra – EricTheCarGuy

Replacing a Distributor, Acura Integra – EricTheCarGuy

Well I think the title will sum this one up. Yes, I did loan my car to my brother the other day only to get it back with a bad distributor, luckily I had one in a box, not the correct one but one that worked. This also covers firing order and a few other tips should you have to replace the igniter or coil. In my opinion the only things you should automatically replace a distributor on a Honda or Acura for are the bearing going bad like in this video or oil leaking inside the assembly. I don’t think they should ever be automatically replaced for a no start. I also highly recommend using Honda ignition parts, if not you may be sorry.

There will be a “sequel” to this covering setting the ignition timing, click the link below.

  1. So theoretically if the fork on the distributor goes easily into the end of the cam (and u dint have to force it) the firing orders should be right?

  2. Hey ETCG! Thanks for posting. I bought a 2000 Acura Integra LS and I love the car but it's been giving me issues. Check engine light came on, mechanic said distributor needs replacing. I drove it home (0.2 miles) and check engine instead of staying on, started flashing. I can't get the car above 20MPH. Any thoughts? Is this indeed a distributor issue? Mechanic says they cost $480-650. When I checked online it seems they can be in the $150 range. Does this sound right?

  3. So I'm kinda confused on the marking thing I see alot a vidoes of them marking the disturbuator..what is the point of tht. You didn't mark anythbg and it started right up.1 more question can u change the ignition coil with out taking the whole disturbuator apart.?

  4. I need to the igniter on one of these distributors. Do I need to use thermal compound between the igniter and heat sink (or does new igniter come with thermal compound or thermal pad ) ?

  5. This video is like 9 years old but I want to say Thank you Eric. my integra broke down on me this morning and after determining it was the distributor I bought a new rotor and ignitor module since they both looked burnt up a bit. threw it back together and the car fired up great! Not sure if you still check these comments but I just wanted to say thank you for making this video it helped me out a lot.

  6. …"In the parts depot". You are funny. Ha! I too, need a new distributor. 😉 My 2001 Acura Integra will not turn over, but I do have an ignite.

  7. an auto repair shop was going to charge me almost 900 to replace this in my car. i said NOPE. getting some buddies to fix it for way cheaper.

  8. I used my voltage check light to see which end was getting power and my negative wasn’t lighting up when I probed it.. when I probed the positive with the light, the light lit up.. what could be the issue? I know the negative is what sends power out to the spark plugs.

  9. CR-V 376,000 miles. Thanks so much Eric. Except in my case, it didn't start the first few turns of the key. I had to crank it a few times, long long, until it finally ignited and started. Runs very smooth now, without the sputtering on low gears going uphill. BTW mine is 376,000 miles, since 1999, the first time changing the distributor.

  10. Hi Eric I have slight different question, I recently replaced a head gasket on my honda accord 2000 4 cylinder and after replaceing gasket I reinstalled everything and try to crank the car up but it wouldn't start, I suspect there is somthing wrong with didtrbutor and sure enough the distributor camshaft keys broken. What may cause that? Please help me, thanks!

  11. Hey i have a 2001 integra. My car was misfireing so we replaced the distributor and now its stalling out every 30 minutes while driveing

  12. Finally made good use of this video, same process on my 94 prelude si. I had the same issue except the inside of my distributor ( Its either stock or OEM replaced) was covered in a white dust.

  13. So here's a somewhat unrelated question. I recently changed headgasket on my 1991 integral. Now thestarter wont turn. Question if i did not snap those plugs back tightly at the distributor could that be why starter wont turn over now?
    Thanks,

  14. hello,

  16. Question… I have a d16y8 motor in a 93 civic that was monkeyed from hell by the people I bought it from.. anyways I took the dizzy that was on the motor (which was wrong and held on by one bolt because of mounting placement and is obd1) off so happens I had another y8 dizzy so I took the internals out of the obd2 dizzy and put the obd1 internals in the house everything went in smoothly and Is bolted correctly to the head my problem now is I am getting crank but no start. All plug cables are in the right firing order, the pin was lined up correctly with the cam, I'm hoping it is spark which I will run test on tonight but if it is not spark what else could be wrong and did I screw up

  17. hey @ericthecarguy I have a 1999 Acura CL 2.3 (4 cyl) with 228,000 miles I was getting the check engine light code P1382 CYP number 1 no signal. I drove with it and while I was on the highway it shut off and wouldnt start back up. I tried a new distributor and that didn't work. I recently changed the spark plugs and wires. I took the dist. cap off and the rotor did not spin when I cranked the motor. I was thinking it could be the time belt could that be the reason the dist. rotor doesnt turn and i have code P1382. Could the camshaft be broken?

    thanks for the help!

  18. im having the most difficult time getting the electronic connector to disconnect, I'm pressing the tab in the middle but the damn thing does not want to come off. I even tried using a flat head

  19. i got a 92 acura integra that needs a new distributor. problem is, i don't have a spare to try the method you used. question is: would a distributor from a, say 93 or 94 acura, be compatible with my 92 without worrying about shorting anything?
really enjoy your videos, by the way. really helped me rebuild a 98 Accord with awful suspension problems.

  20. hey erick i have a 1994 camry. it will run like for 10 minutes and after that start losing power and it die.
as hard as i hit the gas pedal still won't stay on, i think it die faster

  21. This brings back memories… This was the only problem I had with my civic (89) in those days, I couldn't get anyone to help me out, so I did it myself. Although I've built many 350's and GM, I was sweating doing this job myself. But I tell you what Eric, it was by far the easiest distributor I've ever changed out.. The engineering in those Hondas was awesome.. It only went together one way… In time.. It was great!! Thanks for the video too, good job!!

  22. hey im having crank no start problem.. ive recently replaced my icm , ignition coil and rotor, it ran fine for a good 2 weeks but now it starts for 3 seconds then dies..any ideas? my friend tapps on distributor cap an it starts but not long?
