Questions Answered #1 – EricTheCarGuy

I know this video is long but it covers a lot. Nobelheight has given me quite a few questions to answer so I decided to answer them here. The cover a wide range, everything from aerodynamics to coolant color. Sit back and try to absorb if you can. I may be doing more of this type of video in the future to give quick answers to questions posed so if you have questions post them to this video. If you post the question in the form of a video response you will get a video answer, I make no promises for the rest.

  1. Ok I thought it was a great idea to delete the egr and the smog system on my 95 f150 (5.8) and that joker doesn't run worth a crap now. I've had several of these and the 5.0 mustangs that have already had his deleted and ran great( but never deleted it myself.. is my vacuums wrong or what happened…?

  2. great video.  very informative and clearly explained.  i just started working at an auto parts store about a month ago and i know next to nothing about how vehicles run and the various systems and their components.  I have found your videos to be very educational and helpful as i learn as much as i can so i can do my job.  thanks

  3. nice video most of all your videos are nice and very informative i am wondering if youve made a video on why a car could smell like gas, when i am driving it comes through the vents and when i open my door to get out of the car i can smell gas as well just wondering if youve already made a video on such a question and i just can not find it if not PLZ PLZ PLZ PLZ can you try and at least point me in a direction to start looking i have no idea i thought maybe the fuel filter but i dont know

  4. Eric, for some reason my fan comes on when car is off and parked even when car is cold and drains my battery, what can this be? I have a 1992 Acura Legend Base

  5. Hey Eric

You talked about the plastic covers on cars. I was also wondering about the plastic covers on the engine. I took mine off on my 1.8T…I thought that it would stop keeping heat around the coilpack area and maybe prolong their life…opinions?

  6. @OWN12S Sad to say but the only thing in the dash that could leak like that is the heater core sorry. Yea getting out that dash could be fun. You might consider bypassing it if you don't drive in cold weather by routing the supply hose back to the outlet on the engine, that would at least eliminate the leak but you won't have any heat at all.

  7. If coolant is leaking on passenger floor board, does this mean an automatic replacement of heater core? Can this be fixed without taking apart the dash. Chevy dealer wants $1100.00 to replace this in my 1999 Corvette.

  8. @cbaxz24 You might want to check the fuel pressure. You may have a leaking injector which you can find by looking at the pressure after you turn the key off, if you see a big drop in pressure it might indicate an injector that is leaking fuel into the intake. If you have any check engine lights start with those especially if you have codes for a coolant temp sensor, in fact this might be a good place to start even if you don't have a code for it. Good luck and keep me posted.

  9. i have a question! i have a 93 cavalier 3.1 and when i go to start it after it's been sitting for a while it's like its fluding and you can smell gas bad and sounds like its running on 2 cyls but then clears up after a min or so and it does not have the power it use to. allso sometimes i can go to start it and it starts first crack ive replaced plugs coils wires air idle controle valve fuel filter air filter if anyone has any idea what may be causing this e-mailat george_199125@hotmail.com

  10. @DragonSpeak707UTube You might consider finding a radiator repair shop that can repair your old one as they are not only equipped to repair it but also pressure test it to verify the work when they are done, it would suck to attempt a repair only to find it didn't work and have to take it back out again.

  11. Is there a DIY heater core? I have a 1970 Datsun pickup and the heater core has a leak. No one carries them new. I would rather have a new one or make one if its possible.

  12. eric i have a 92 astro the doors for the heater were just worked on so they would open as i had no heat now i have heat but the air pressure or force of the air coming out of the vent is low. also I have a black box with air condition metal lines coming out of on the passenger side top of engine not sure what this is sorry but air is blowing out fast from that right where the metal lines are looks like it was sealed with RTV and there is a leak there cold air is coming out also

  13. Hey I was wondering can you do a vid on changing the Fuel Sending Unit. Its a common problem if your Fuel Gauge doesn't work. Thats what Happened to my 1999 Mitsubishi Galant. I plan on Fixing it myself since I don't have to take the Gas Tank Off. Saves a lot of work and money on my end. Thanks! Keep the Great Vids Comming!!

  14. Bypassing heater cores is usually pretty easy, just loop the hose coming out of the engine to the inlet coming back in and your good to go until it gets cold again.

  15. Etheline Glycol is what was commonly use in automobiles. These days I'm not so sure since they have changed the formulas greatly over the past few years and it varies a great deal between manufacturers.

  16. The last time I deiced an aircraft was the winter of 2000/01 and there 2 types of glycol that we used. Ethelean and proplean baised. One type was used on aircraft with jet engines and the other was used on the smaller prop aircraft. Is the propolean baised glycol the non-petroleam baised glycol? If so then that's the type we used on the jets.

  17. With an oil leak like that I usually start by cleaning the engine as best I can. Then you can apply a leak detection spray to the areas you think are leaking (check the auto parts store). When the oil does start to leak the white residue left by the spray will make it easy to see where those leaks are coming from. It sounds like you really should look into it, smoke from under the hood might mean that it's getting on the exhaust and that could cause a fire.

  18. Depends on if your leak was external or internal. I have heard of certain products that can be put into the cooling system that can "cure" a head gasket failure but I have no experience with this. However the discoloration that you describe with your coolant might indicate that there may be combustion gasses leaking into the coolant. I would have the coolant checked for the presents of combustion gasses to be safe. For the most part coolant should retain it's color.

  19. I had a question. I have a 89 325i BMW. I recently had a blown head gasket and couldnt afford to fix it. so i got an alternative and bought some sealant. and it worked! i was pleased with the results. but i noticed that my coolant is a clear color. i use 50/50. i was just wondering if its suppose to stay green like it is when you pour it in. or over time does it change to a lighter color.

    thanks a lot man 🙂

  20. Don't worry about the "flush" part. Just drain the coolant out and refill it with new, just that will go a long way. FYI for the most part the coolant gets changed when the H2O pump gets changed at about 100K. Take the old coolant and put it in the empty coolant bottles and take it to be disposed of or recycled. Keep it away from pets, it has kind of a sweet taste and pets or other animals have been hurt or killed by it.

  21. 7:10 oh yes!

I think I need to flush the coolant and put new in my Saturn and my CRV. Is it a "no-no" to let the coolant drain down the driveway? Where is the "flushing" supposed to take place… in a perfect world that is?

  22. Heater Core??? Is that the thing that costs a ton in labor to replace and -when it goes bad- leaks onto the passenger side floor boards? Ooooh I hate those.
