They got a lot more relaxed about the "becoming an inmate" part of the program. Here they are threatening to remove Ryan for getting close to inmates, four seasons later they've got Abner in there being the enforcer for a race gang.

Either the female pods never sleep or they have so little happening that they have to focus on the small stuff.
Brian was FAR too soft and its ridiculous that he thinks only 1 person was going to cause trouble with him.
Of course Brian has sympathy for the guards and not the inmates. He is an attorney for the Department of Corrections so he will never say anything against the jail. He deserved the treatment he got.
