Baffling. Appraisals should be based on sold neighboring home prices. I don't know how the 1st appraiser justified the lower appraisal amount, regardless of the skin color of the homeowner. He is, to say the least, incompetent.
That's a different appraiser so that doesn't mean it was racism.If she had used the same appraiser and that appraiser raised it afterward then you COULD say racism.So easy to say racism nowadays when you don't get what you want

The final part of this story needs to be accountability, it can't just end there.
I'm sorry that this couple had to experience this. But I think they could've avoided having to refinance had smarter decisions been made before buying a home. The home is worth $465K. The wife is an attorney and the husband is an "artist". They didn't get into detail on what kind of artist he is. But I'm sure his income is significantly lower and the mortgage payments are made mostly from his wife's income. Seems to me that they bought a home that was a little above their price range.
She did not devalue her home by simply living in it. THEY devalued her home because they are simply hateful and racist.

As an appraiser trainee I can honestly say this is silly. An appraisal is an opinion of value based on the things in a house that will be there once they move. Meaning floors, the roof, countertops, gutters, etc. Photos don't add or takeaway value of a home since they won't be there with the next owner. The first person may have done a bad appraisal, but there's no way it's because he saw a black woman in pictures on a wall. And to also imply the second appraiser is racist because he valued it higher because of white pictures. They don't understand the appraisal process and are completely jumping to conclusions. (Not trying to deminish real racism, but this ain't it unless there's some big info left out)

One homeowner. One alleged racist appraisal. What does that mean? The entire appraisal industry is racist. But of course!
Fake news, the owners refused to supply the first appraisal or name who did it, couple just used a publicity stunt to increase the value of the home. No proof an apparaisal was even completed at that value.
