INSANE Engine Swap – Mazda RX-7!

We saw this gorgeous Mazda RX-7 last year at Drag Week 15′ doing some kick-ass 8 second passes, and we were so happy to see it back again this year! Apparently, an 8-second Mazda wasn’t enough, so Rick ditched the old small-block Chevy motor, and swapped it out with a nice 555 cubic inch Chevy big-block motor. Paired with 2 Garrett, 88mm turbos, this little RX-7 is now being pushed to mid 7-second passes, trapping OVER 190mph! INSANE!

  1. "Well ya know we heard a noise, so we just pulled over real quick and pulled the camshaft out…"

You have to love the difference between car guys, and the kind of people that have to call Roadside Assistance when they get a flat tire!

  2. It may have gotten faster from last year but it still leaves the hole slow, especially for something that should be far lighter than most of the competition.

Edit: as I hit send "it had a 3.25 rearend" …..

  3. Thing hooks up really well and looks very stable at speed – well built says I.

Waiting for a Vette with a rotary one of these days.

  4. Scroll down to the comment section and find you guys fighting with the gloves off lol. Car guys are passionate about their cars. Shit I'm almost scared to post this but if it's any consolation to the jdm guys he bought this car as a shell. Probably an inch away from the crusher so think of it as a rx saved from mazda heaven.

  5. VERY cool. One thing I notice is that it doesnt launch hard AT ALL but pulls stupidly up top! Listen to it launch, 1st gear is good for like 120mph and it sounds like its bogging a LOT. I think that they tuned it that way to preserve driveline parts and make an extremely consistent car. It doesnt sound like it even hits boost until like 200 feet down the 1/4! Cars like this are very interesting to me, showing that not all cars are tuned the same.. Every driver has his/her own preference on where they want their power delivered. Looks like the driver eases out the lauch, then lets those 88mm's pull him down the track 🙂

  6. Why a big block inside a rotary monster? Idc if it doesn't pass the 7 second pass but it's a JDM car, poor thing doesn't deserve to be treated like this 🙁

  7. inb4 butthurt rotary fanboys

I should be clear. I like the rotary as well, but any 7 second car at almost 200mph is cool IMO.

  8. engine porn, that engine bay made me pre cum, and he picked a rx7 because his son can pick it up while he makes repairs underneath, fuck a rotary.

  9. Measurements in the States are so awkward, "it's a 15"x12" with a 275mm" tire. Mixing metric and customary like a boss. Science, medicine, and the military use the metric system; heck, even my Corvette had metric bolts and nuts.
