Never was a fan of the Carter presidency – but I totally admire and respect his philanthropy in starting up Habitat for Humanity! My wife and I personally have been the beneficiary of a Habitat home and after just 16 years, we had accumulated enough equity and the market move upwards that we were able to sell and purchase our home that we're retiring in for CASH and still have nearly $20k in the bank leftover. As the director of Habitat once told me, "We don't offer a 'hand out.' We offer a 'hand UP!'" And how true that was. It wasn't free by any means, but it was amazing that my wife and I had an active hand in actually building our home from the 1st day of breaking ground, to the final clean up before moving in! For that alone, I truly RESPECT President Carter – regardless of his presidential short-comings!
