People criticizing Jim Ryun? First sub 4 minute mile by a high school runner. Record lasted about 30 years. Held the world record in the mile for almost 15 years. Also world record in the 880 yards. Mase the 1964 Olympics as a high schooler. Silver medal in 1968. Held running camps for many years. Was a US Representative from Kansas. Was a great ambassador and humanitarian during the Cold War.
I attended his camp 3 summers. My first year was my junior year of high school. I received a call from Ryun himself about the camp. All 3 camps were fantastic. During the first camp my parents bought pizza and pop for the campers (only 10 campers that year) on the last day. The highlight of the day was coming back from a 10 mile run. The bottles we're glass at the time. Mixing the sweat with the condensation made a slippery slope. Ryun picked up a bottle of root beer and it shattered all over the floor. He was a multiple world record holder, Olympic medalist and great humanitarian.
In the mid 60's and early 70's he was one of the most recognizable names and faces in the country.
