Something that's been left out of this report:
Anastazio Somoza — Nicaragua's dictator — whose family was put in power by the United States in the 1930s — used a helicopter (courtesy of the United States taxpayers [they don't make helicopters in Nicaragua]) to deal with "problem" Nicaraguans, i.e., those who spoke out against the US-backed dictatorship. Dissident Nicaraguans were taken for a helicopter ride and dropped into this live lava lake.
Somoza fled the country after the Sandinistas overran Managua in 1978, looting the Nicaragua's central bank before doing so. He was subsequently hunted down and assassinated by Sandinistas in Paraguay where Somoza had fled.
The U.S. never has once promoted or nurtured democracy abroad. It has — invariably — promoted the interests of U.S. banking and business interests, no the matter the cost to the citizens of the countries in which they do so.
