It is not up to the defense to say whether a given witness can be called and whether the witness is a liar, before he testifies, no less. It is up to the Judge and no one else whether a given person may be called and up to the Jury, and no one else, to decide whether what is testified to under oath and challenged by cross examination is to be accepted as truthful. Then, when witnesses for both sides have been called and questioned, possibly more than once, and closing arguments have been made, the Jury will have to decide whether what they believe to be true justifies removing the impeached person from office. That decision involves more than the guilt or innocence that are the be all and end all of a criminal trial. The senators must decide what is best for the Nation.
