  1. While living in NYC in 1988, I was driving truck for Yellow Freight. One late autumn afternoon the winds were really howling and after finishing my deliveries in lower Manhattan, the dispatcher sent me uptown to do two quick pickups in midtown. For myself, the day was uneventful and I finished up and went home. While eating dinner with my wife, a report similar to this appeared on the evening news. It had been so windy that construction had been halted on several buildings in midtown. As I started to tell my wife about how crazy the winds were that day, the news footage panned across the location of the incident and I froze mid-sentence, causing my wife to look up from her meal and say, "Oh my god, what's wrong? You look like you've seen a ghost."

The location was just south of the park and if memory serves, I believe it was on 6th Ave (or Avenue of the Americas for non-New Yorkers). I'm sure I must of been pale and I almost felt for a moment that I had left my body. Apparently, a 2×4 had been blown off a stack of scaffolding materials on the 40th floor to connect with the skull of a businessman with bad timing. And it was not five feet from where I had paused on the very sidewalk to finish noting my last pickup of the day on my clipboard, and less then 30 minutes after I had driven away – to live the next 30 years to today (and hopefully beyond).

  2. So sorry for her loss and prayers to her family. This was tragedy. Wanted to share this passage to put our short time on earth into perspective.

2 Jesus answered, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? 3 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. 4 Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.”

    Luke 13:2-5
