Apollo 11 50th Anniversary: Safety man | ABC News

Apollo 11’s Michael Collins on the escape from the moon.

On July 16, 1969, the trio lifted into space aboard the Apollo 11 and then entered a lunar orbit. By the next day, Armstrong and Aldrin, aboard the lunar module Eagle, had separated from Collins who remained in the command module.

And on July 20, 1969, Americans and the staff at Apollo Mission Control in Houston, Texas, watched and listened in amazement as Armstrong and then Aldrin placed their feet on the moon’s surface.

  1. I have one of his painting reproductions. He was the bridge between Neil and Buzz who got most of the attention and all the 400,000 it took to make those moon landings happen. If the US had not succeeded the Soviets would have kept trying with their N1 and moon program. It was spy sat picture of one of those N 1’s sitting on a launch pad that caused NASA to change the mission of Apollo 8.

  2. Michael Collins was responsible for checking their location through the sextant and also did two docking maneuvers during the mission…his role was really important.

  3. This is so fake, like they had better technology 50 years ago 🤣😂 Why they didn't go again? They could live stream the whole thing right? But wait they can't get on the moon 🤣😂

  4. Mr. Collins…I remember thinking of you that night, watching tv and the moon from the porch of our best friends house, that you were all alone while Buzz and Neil had each other for company. I realized at my young age (week before 14th birthday) that you played a crucial role in that adventure. We all said prayers that week for you! I'm thankful you're still here to enjoy the 50th Anniversary. Congratulations on a job WELL DONE !!!

  5. Two prominent Canadians contributed to the Apollo program – Owen Maynard of Sarnia,Ontario and James Chamberlin of Kamloops,BC. They, along with a dozen other Canadians, were immediately hired by NASA in the early 1960s when the Canadian government at that time cancelled the Avro Arrow project and left them unemployed. Canada's loss,America's gain. Happy 50th Anniversary !

  6. "ET, round head, looks effeminate…" Most of us here will never experience close to half the adventure in Mike Collins' life. Good luck looking that healthy at 88 y.o. if you even live that long. I doubt anyone has a healthier attitude about life after the astronaut corps. Brilliant job on bringing Air & Space to life, early and ON if not (as I've read) under budget. He is good government personified. As for his perspective in mid-life and later , he said that being an astronaut was amazing, but that when his time to move on came it was over. The man lives in the moment. He's an even bigger hero to me than Neil Armstrong.

  7. The last part of the mission was performed by three human beings!
And those three men did it !
Even if I am not an American citizen, I am proud to support them, cheers !!!
    What a wonderful memory of July 20th '69 👍🌛🔝

  8. I was 6 years old when my family toured the facilities and watched the launch. It took us 3 days to drive back to Elmira NY. And the same for them to reach the moon. We watched the landing and first four steps on TV

  9. he was worried then a little and as many might want, keeping Mike alive as long as possible for Turtle touchdown or perhaps some further complications might create a rigmarole, a word this anniversary which curiously sprang to mind. I,m sure anyway if he's not alive his spirit not the rover will be remembered. Until then celebrate easily ,hey Mike it would be seriously not good to know if you weren't around until gateway or whatever best wishes for being so daring courageous and just make coffee and appreciate the calm ,especially like not being disturbed on the sleep there and back. Interesting basic golds and hues in the decor also important as the British fictional similarities of cultural interest also influenced so much . International co operation is already inevitable

  10. At this point, one of three things is going to have to happen: NASA is either going to have to actually go to the moon, or they are going to have to admit that it was all a cold war propaganda stunt, or they are going to have to fake another trip. Given their history, my money is on them faking another trip at some point.

  11. Why all talks about moon landing as it's something that's actually happen when it's just a lie. A lie that can be proved so simple just by looking at the image of earth from the moon perspective where u see the earth small as the moon from earth perspective and more even more hilarious the moon shadow on earth as earth it's small and moon have earth size.. just a retard can accept the moon shadow on earth as u see earth shadow on moon ( moon faze)
We all know the moon cast shadow on the earth equal with its size 🤣

  12. I don't blame any of these guys for what they were made to do. They were just innocent air force pilots who were roped into a propaganda war.
