I love there is an Indigenous People's day. They deserve it.
But why erasing Columbus day completely? Why not just rename it "Discovery Day" or something like that, and have the Indigenous People's Day the day before or the day after? Just like that, spanish contributions to US, history and culture are erased from american history, all in a mist of hatred against everything that is spanish or hispanic, that Biden now use as a political advantage. Not a single word about the spanish, evading the topic in his speech. Like if naming Columbus and Spain was taboo. Thanks to this anti-hispanic propaganda, which many movements are using to rewrite spanish history, nowadays the spanish colonization is seen just like simple raiding and sacking. Just conquerors, rapers, robbers, etc. Very far away from truth. Let me refresh some facts for Biden, and for the haters he is indirectly exalting by his actions and words (or lack of words):
Columbus was punished by the spanish queen and king due to how he mistreated the natives. Spain was the first european country, in XVI century, to enact laws to protect the indigenous peoples of the americas. That's why they are counted by tens of millions in the spanish America, and not just a few thousand living in concentration camps called "reservations". The spanish explorers allied themselves with many native tribes and cities, and their sovereignty was respected because of this afterwards. Conquered nations were not destroyed, or killed, but assimilated in spanish culture, unviolently. It wasn't a genocide, Spain didn't go to America to hunt natives or just make slaves. The indigenous people were granted spanish citizenship, given lands and ownerships. In fact, many gold and silver mines were owned by spanish american natives. Moctezuma's children were named nobles in the spanish court as dukes, and they still live nowadays. In fact, one of the Moctezuma's descendants created the spanish "guardia civil". Spain was the first country in history to create an international healthcare expedition, the Balmis Expedition, against smallpox in America and Asia. All of this while in north america they were chasing natives with guns. North american natives that were fleeing from the US oppression, were welcome in New Spain. Spain aided the north american independence with weapons, supplies, and troops, fighting the british alongside the americans and the french. But I have the suspicion that only the french contribution is celebrated due to this wave of hatred against the spanish heritage widely in America. The reward from US to the spanish: propaganda against Spain in XIX century, a war against Spain to take its territories… and now deletion of Columbus Day, the final blow to oblivion, drowning in a sea of fallacies.
