  2. My heart hurts that he tried to learn several times before but was turned away for “being too far behind”. I’m so glad you tried again sir. That old lady was right. You’re never too late to learn. Keep up the great work! It’ll get easier as you go and before you know it you will understand first hand the beautiful world of reading.

  3. illiterate and driving? explains so much bad driving. My son was reading at age4, went to Alief district for K, was told he really didn't know how to read until he did worksheets perfectly. Was in Pasadena district briefly where focus was on answering worksheet over and over until it was perfect, memorized multiplication tables, understanding what algebra is, reading above grade level was discouraged and kid became suicidal at age 7. When pulled him out the last book the teacher let him read was "good night moon" when 3 mos prior he was reading "Little House " series at home. Tx schools are a train wreck in every way.

I was born and raised in Houston and I can tell you from my many years of living there, working in community programs and in the school system, that the claim that 1 in 3 adults there is illiterate is nonsense. I suspect there is some hidden motive for making such a ridiculous claim.

    Cheer up! Please don't be ashamed of it.
    Here in Korea, on the contrary.
    Even College educated students can not understand spoken english and speak at all(deaf and dumb).
    But you understand and speak English well. It's not too late to learn reading. In here, Even english teacher don't speak well and understand as much as you.
    In other words, you are good at your language.

  19. It has everything to do with the low quality "ejamakashun" kids get in the "publik skul sistim." For one thing, schools should get back to TEACHING, rather than indoctrinating.

  20. A ten year old?! That's child abuse. Children are NEVER supposed to take care of their parents. Their trash parents should've been responsible enough not to have them, if they couldn't provide for them!! Why are people constantly having children when they themselves don't have the skills to pass on to them to survive in America?

  26. I used to tutor people in reading, and it’s one of the most rewarding things I ever did. I’m changing careers to work with addiction sufferers, and I will sure tutor clients, if they let me. I’d love to set up a reading and other educational tutoring program in a long term treatment or transitional sober housing.
