According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 2,833 first responders and survivors have passed away from illnesses related to the site.

  3. to those commenting that it's their own fault for not wearing respirators…. hindsight is always 20/20. Yes, we know now (and knew then) that those working in the search and rescue efforts needed respiratory protection, however at the time- the importance was getting those who were trapped in the wreckage, out. It's not fair to judge others for not wearing a respirator mask when they were busy moving rubble, metal and concrete out of the way to get to those who were crying for help with sometimes their last breaths. These 1st responders were doing the best they could with what little they had to work with- may God bless them all for their sacrifices they made then and continue to make now.

  5. What i do not understand is how they came up with who was eligible health coverage etc due to the aftermath. I lived in Williamsburg when it occured and you my mother and grandmother literally watched the second plane hit the building and watched the buildings fall from our window yet they say we were not affected by what happened when the smoke, sud etc traveled. That day was one of the most traumatizing moments of our lives and we almost lost a family member in the towers but somehow do not qualify. Smh

  21. It was horrendous even out West! We were alerted later that, we needed to be alerted to terrorist threats and our national security information. In New York City, it was worse. The memories were terrible at first after 9/11, because we went to war in Afghanistan and Iraq. Twenty years later, we are finally out of this conflict. Yikes!

I noticed so many firemen do not have masks on or anything and that smoke cant be healthy. seems silly if you have ever breathed bad smoke from a fire or anything it immediately chokes you to the point of not breathing and sometimes worse like everything locks up like burning plastic or rubber or chemicals. PLus carrying 80-100 pounds of equipment up stars seemed way too hard for most if not all.

  33. Its good to bring up the issue 20 years later. The men and women who braved the day most have died and some suffered horrible health issues but no one spoke about it. Now we can debate the issue you know, that one time we remember them

    It was amazing .

  39. In 1998, my neighbor Cindy’s daughter moved to NYC for a new job..she was in her early 20’s. We moved to a different neighborhood, but in 2012, I ran into the my former neighbor again. I asked if Amy was still in Manhattan; how was she doing? Cindy told me sadly that Amy was dead; she had developed a small-cell carcinoma from the toxic fallout at Ground Zero…”collateral damage “ from one of the darkest and most evil days in American history. I had no idea; how many people really died because of 911…?
    Her name was Amy, she had so much to give.
