Our adopted GSD would turn around and start barking at us after we let him out if we were inside. He was a little confused.

During high school a classmate's Police officer Dad taught their family dogs a neat trick. When protecting the family and property they first aimed for the legs. After :02 they aimed for the crotch. After the first attempted break-in/robbery they never had any further problems. Amazingly effective.
