Lived in Tulsa for 5 years.
Two years directly the other side of the freeway from that graveyard.
That cemetery was always very very unsettling to me riding my bike past it. Later driving past it. It did not feel like a cemetery.
Even in 1995 – 2000 when I lived there…..it was whispered. No one EVER came out and deliberately said "Race Riots" or "Race Massacre"
BUT
There was still a thought of hostility even in 1995.
Seemingly the wealth gap of the late 90's was opposite of most cities. African Americans had the nicer homes, nicer neighborhoods, etc in the "Gilcrease" and northern spaces of town.
And folks did not like that at the time I moved there. It was there even as recently as 1995 – 2000.
But no one ever said anything out loud. Again it was whispers. Little here and a little there. And that cemetery was one of those constant whispers. A whisper turned reality. And I have a definitive answer as to why the cemetery was so uncomfortable to be near or in.

I honestly heard about this through the series of watchmen the show from HBO and honestly I was shocked
My step-grandpa, who’s a life long racist and 82, said he worked with an old guy, when he was in his 20s, who helped dispose of the bodies. This guy bragged about this to my grandpa because as I said he’s a racist and the guy thought my grandpa would find it interesting. According to him this guy said a lot of the bodies were just trucked to the nearest bridge and dumped in the Arkansas river. This makes since to me, I don’t think white people back then would bother digging graves even mass graves, atleast for everyone. It also sounded like at first, from the recounted story, that people were just taking on themselves to get rid of the bodies, and most only knew of one way to dispose of a body quickly. Sadly, I don’t think many of the victims will ever be found, perhaps the original intention of the disposers.
So fkd up that this ever happened. We should find out if any of those who are to blame are still alive and hold them responsible.
