Now that there are much less border agents at airports, the real emergency is not knowing who is entering or leaving the country.
We moved to the border of Brownsville Tx in 1993 from New York. Its a very safe and friendly place to live. It takes 10 minutes to walk to the bridge to cross to Matamotos Mexico but it takes at least 2 hours (in the daytime) to come back to US. I have been to many borders and we have the most secured US borders. Our boarder Patrols ( are very strict and doing excellent jobs) will ask legal documents from local and non residence in the boarder, before they let you enter US. If you use the car to cross you will be with a K9 police and if they have suspicious in your car, you will be proceed for more thorough investigation. You should come down to Brownsville for your future vacation and see it for yourselves, South Padre Island is only 30 minutes away. Trump is lying about CRISIS and creating all the chaos. There are NO crisis in the southern borders. He shut down the government for what and why now? Muller is coming for him and there is no time to waste? He said the other day "he knows a great company who will do a wonderful job for the wall ( maybe he will be getting a CUT).
