Kids who have to "care" for their parents or in general have a tough time when they are young, need to grow up faster and don't really have a childhood. Sad, but yes, this is what happens somethimes. And in my opinion, way to often.
It's very telling that he would rather stay in this situation than be adopted, based on information that he has received about the adoption system.
