U.S. Added 559,000 Jobs in May, Employers Report Labor Shortages

President Biden touted the latest jobs report as “historic progress.” Still, employers are reporting labor shortages. At least 25 states are stopping federal pandemic-related unemployment benefits, hoping to push residents back to the workforce. For some, it’s an added burden during an already stressful time.» Subscribe to NBC News: http://nbcnews.to/SubscribeToNBC

  1. #SayNoToWorkAbuse
Employers want more for less. Imagine getting threatened to have your pay withheld or the employers brazenly telling you that they want you to work longer hours and weekends but don’t want to pay you. Yep, it happens all over America. And, imagine that on top of that, they want you to wear many hats, run the business, and want you to do the job of 4 people for as little as $8-11/hour while the employer uses PPP pandemic grants to fund their many vacations. Yep, that happens, too. You don’t see a penny of that pandemic grant. Imagine that you have to bring in your own work supplies (basic things like pens and paper) because the employer doesn’t provide any resources you need to do the work and you can’t even get a 5 min. break for water or meals even after working 10-18 hour days. Yep, that happens, too. On top of that, we are subjected to work alongside incompetent “coworkers” who barely do anything, barely show up to work, barely have any experience or skills but get paid more than we do because they play sob stories or outright lie and get away with it. Outrageous work abuse has been going on for decades, and we say enough is enough.

  2. It's not a labor shortage — it's a wage and workers rights shortage!

Employers complain that too few people are returning to work, but America’s “labor shortage” is really a shortage of good wages and workers rights on the job. The clearest sign yet that there are no widespread labor shortages comes from data on wage growth. If companies cannot hire people because there is a worker shortages, it would only be a shortage at current wages. There are obviously a lot of people out of the labor market or unemployed, many of whom would be willing to work at higher wages. Higher wages will entice workers, who are currently out of the labor force, to return to work since they can more easily pay for childcare, for example. Wage growth then should accelerate if employers are really facing worker shortages. But wage growth in general has slowed, in part because more low-wage workers are being rehired and in part because employers are not raising wages. Wages for production, non-supervisory workers, the vast majority of workers, were only 1.2% higher in April 2021 than a year earlier. Unless employers are boosting wages, they are not trying everything possible to fill jobs.

The data instead suggest that jobs are still hard to come by for many workers. Unemployment is still widespread, especially among some economically vulnerable groups. The U.S. is at another such historical crossroads due to the pandemic, and working people are weighing in by staying home. In the 1970s, employers started creating the kinds of bad jobs that are now the norm; they started hiring part-time, contract labor, lowering wages and benefits, and attacking workers unions with new vehemence. Meanwhile, U.S. policy didn’t keep up. It abandoned working people to the whims of corporations and the market.

America’s working women and men are now looking at these bad jobs and the lack of governmental oversight and support, weighing the risks and personal costs, and deciding that they just aren’t doing it anymore.

  3. Funny how these news outlets always fail to report the 143% debt-to-GDP ratio in the USA. Studies have proven that for a country to thrive, it has to be below 60% and we're miles away from that. Our leaders are a disgrace to this country. 😒

  4. 500,000 of these jobs are McDonald's and Amazon , I feel like the world is trying to force you to choose from like 1 of 5 jobs

    You can work at
    Amazon or McDonald's
And if you don't like it go Lyft Uber and delivery
It's a poor man's game in my mind , and they are forcing us all to play along with their crooked rules. Living in the old US feels exactly like playing with a cheater in Monopoly.

  5. Yay, 559,000 part time waiter, bartender, burger flipping jobs with no set hours! Let me see you pay $1800 a month rent making $225 a week before taxes. Yea, people are really looking forward to get back to work LMAO

  6. Have you been looking for a herbal doctor to cure your herpes virus, HIV,std, cancer, HPV, kidney, mental health, etc i was cured after using dr osaba medicine on YouTube

  7. I wish they would give citizens senior money out of the stimulus money the money that they're giving Senior only got a small amount and that's money I wish someone would do a story even the veteran is left out people with disability only got a small amount and there's still do you change a thousand and unemployment tax breaks baby is 3800 extra for children the Democrats fail to make sure that we as senior citizen receive more benefits

  8. Stop giving unemployment benefits, stimulus checks, free rent and people will actually show up for job interviews and start working. Americans are depending on the government and Biden to pay them to stay home. Get back to work and pay your rent. People feel like they have an option because Biden gave them that power. Stop being lazy and work.

  9. @lisa otis yes the african american hollywood celebrities do lighten their skin color. Several articles mentioned they use a orange peeling lightening lotion fer.la/71 from japan which easily turns their dark skin light. This is not really surprising these days it seems everybody changes their appearance, they should be honest about it though.
