I have traveled from Australia to Ukraine, Crimea and Russia 20 times the last decade. The western media are getting the story from the side of the Ukraine nationalists, a Fascist coup starting in 2009 with their violence against Russians in Ukraine since 2013. This coup is controlling all press today so it is hard for westerners to know what is happening and we have been badly mislead. The Donbas is comprised of many Russians having been on ostracized for 25 years and having received many violent attacks from the Western military trained and NATO-supplied Ukraine nationalists for 7 years. The interest of UN might not reliably align with the people who actually matter – the ordinary residents of Odessa, Kharkiv, etc. If we simply asked what they want to we will get a different answer than once to put it on the news. Keep in mind that the whole of Ukraine – including the western side – voted to side with Russia in 2008 before the result was deemed unacceptable by Washington and overturned artificially. Much of the violence production occurs in Kiev where nationalists are trained militarily, some are also trained in Britain, and the media within Ukraine for a long time being controlled by Western business partners – so the public of Ukraine themselves can be misled if the country isn’t sovereign and in control of its own information. We can imagine European spectators viewing a hostile China-Russia-Iran military alliance terrorising Mexico, pushing US residents out of Mexico ans murdering many of them, then eventually the hostile military alliance supplying weapons with advanced planes and talking about placing nuclear weapons there, and then Washington still be so patient to wait 7 years with peace agreements. As the violence culminates without any US action, finally US allowing troops to try to end the terrorism in Mexico with the goal to return Mexico to its former sovereignty. All believable so far, but then imagine the entire media hysterically calling US as the aggressors in that situation.

The Russian's already know from lessons learned at Stalingrad that Kyiv will likely be able to hold out regardless of what they throw at them.
Putin's only realistic option now is to launch a campaign of terror with constant missiles strikes and shelling (just as we are seeing) in a bid that the adject terror combined with sleepless nights will quickly erode away at Ukrainian spirits in hope that they will subsequently surrender. However this also comes with a huge caveat, cities reduced to smoking piles of rubble and ruins are far more difficult to take, becoming a deadly web of sniper nests and perfect places for troops to hide and ambush them from.
Moscow knows in order to successfully capture Kyiv; on the basis they don't surrender that is, will take the most brutal form of urban warfare imaginable, with lots of gritty and extremely up close and personal killing, to the point of being able to smell the breath of the person you just killed. And which is probably why Putin is now seeking to bring in Chechen vet's who have been fighting for years in Syria and are battle hardened.
