I was a truck driver for 36 years. I was a teamster for part of that time. I was always a company driver and paid hourly. When they made truck driving a by the mile pay scale trade it lessened the quality of the drivers. No pay for sitting or holdups in traffic or weather and waiting for loads. Long times away from your families for little money. Back then Walmart was hard to get on with yet they were by the mile but had you home more. Always a top payer. My friend drove for them. Glad to see they are paying better and training from within.
What happens in a decade when the trucks drive themselves??
Is Walmart truck drivers considered independent contractors? If the 150.000 a year barely covers expenses. There is a reason why there is such a high turnover rate. If you have to pay to maintain the truck and put fuel in it then no, It's still not enough. The report just does not go far enough.

As long as Walmart is not making the drivers pay for leasing of their rigs. As long as they are covering the costs of diesel fuel. As long as they are covering the costs for repairs. As long as they are allowing drivers to stop when they are tired instead of forcing them to drive because of a set timeline they set with their tracking devices. Then yeah that's a good start for Truck Drivers. Add in health benefits and retirement benefits then you are really talking.
