I don’t think it was Smallpox because it’s rare for a disease to mutate and become less severe.

   Chickenpox is one of nine strains of Herpes virus that can infect humans. This is why Chickenpox never leaves your body once you contract it. It lays dormant in your nervous until something triggers it, which then it will travel through your nervous system to your Skin and produce Shingles.
