  1. It’s not just pay. It’s the increasing demands of paperwork and unreasonable changes that make their job impossible. It’s also that their hands are tied when it comes to discipline. Some students make it impossible to teach the class because they’re disruptive.

  2. Its also hard as hell to be a teacher. You need a bachelors, a masters, and 3 fking licenses (5 hour total in testing) to be a teacher in Massachusetts. All every other job pays way more for a masters. Its also political as hell. If your a republican, good luck getting a teaching job here.

  3. If you think it's bad in the public school districts, that's nothing compared to how it is with the private childcare centers and preschools right now. They're so desperate, they'll hire anything that has a heartbeat. Lots of potential for covering up abuse when it involves kids that are to young to say anything. Just 'sayin'. If you're desperate for a job and you can't get hired anywhere else, go apply as a teaching assistant at one of those places. You'll probably get hired as long as you're not on the SO registry, but be prepared to be worked like a slave and degraded and treated like you know what, by your co-workers all day. Seriously the daycare industry is in crisis mode right now. Somethings gotta' give and it ain't gonna be pretty.

  4. It’s not a teacher shortage. Here in NY, districts want you to have every certification under the sun before they even look at your resume and I refuse to go back to school and spend more money without a guarantee of a job. Also, any interview I’ve gone on there’s usually hundreds of applicants. Districts are just getting extremely picky and trying to squeeze the most and demand so much out of one person.

  5. I’m a substitute and this is so real. There are countless openings right now in my district right now for 20+ day gigs. Seems like they’re trying to find coverage because they’re so lacking in consistent staff.

  6. I finished my masters and taught math this past spring semester. My salary literally doubled when I started my current job as an engineer. The students were great for the most part, but the teaching resources were not very good. I did my best to leave work at work although there was always a lot of planning lessons and worrying about what I'd planned that I personally did not enjoy. Now I can leave everything at work and not worry about it until I get back.

  8. God wake up and smell the bacon. We're slaves. If you can't make a living as a teacher then there's something very wrong. That's ok they'll pay nothing and idiots would still work it or think just get another job. Teaching IS a job that's what should scare everyone.

  9. I’m not surprised. To begin with teachers are not paid well and during the COVID-19 lockdown many of them moved away or got another job.

  10. I’m a teacher of 15 years. I support my entire family bc my husband lost his job due to the volatile job market. I make 1300 every two weeks after taxes, health care, health spending card (I pay for), and life insurance. We barely make it. I went back last week, kids come back next week. I don’t think I’ll make the 28 year haul to retirement. The kids are nothing like they once were. Parents come to school trying to fight teachers. Kids are brutal to each other. Everyday is crisis mode. I come home too exhausted to interact and my home life has suffered. We aren’t appreciated. There is a group on social media that is dedicated to trashing my district, administrators, and teachers. Say what you want, I don’t care. I gave the best years of my life to education and although I’ve made the difference in many children s lives it led to me forsaking my own. Since Covid society is despicable. This will be my last year. I will love them, guide them, teach them, be a mentor, connect with their parents, but this is it. My class sizes are massive due to shortages and their is no accountability for behavior. The system goes behind us passes failing students, because of no child left behind and reputation, when they can barely read. The system fails our children and teachers. Maybe I’d feel different if I didn’t know I could do something else and make twice my salary. 48,000 isn’t what you think it is, it’s for the birds.

  11. I had many teachers leave my school when I was a kid, And I understand. Teachers at my school had to deal with so many disrespectful brats

  12. Crazy abusive parents who harass and yell at teachers for expecting students to follow directions and district administration that won’t stand up to the parents and protect the teachers for doing their job are other reasons not mentioned in this report.

  13. Also here in Florida, college of education students have to pass the FTCE certification exam just to start student teaching and is near impossible to pass. I have to defer this fall semester because I haven't passed any section after failing it three times since January.
This is another reason, they want elementary education majors to pass a college question exam that will never apply to our teaching lesson plans. I don't think I need to know the small details on how a home interest loan works to teach first or second grade – you know what I mean?
