I work in manufacturing in the Rust Belt of the US, only been a union member for the last few years. I think a big reason for low membership is because most of the union guys are retiring, there aren't many young faces in unions these days. Most of my peers (older GenZ/young Millennials) have adopted a sort of gig economy mentality. They will work at a manufacturer for 6 months to a year, and move on to the next, so having to pay union dues or having a say in workplace conditions aren't as appealing to them. The job market for manufacturing is hot right now, if you're willing to move to the next town over and have a car then you will continuously find jobs with higher pay and better conditions than the last. Guys are easily getting entry level jobs for $30+/hr. I
Expanding on my initial point that most union members are retiring, it means that many of the superiors in the union are boomers with Macho Man complexes which makes them insufferable for younger people to be around. The work mentality simply is not the same, which is not inherently a bad thing. Times change, the working mentality of a manufacturer in 2020 is very different from a manufacturer in 1980, and the work mentality of a manufacturer from 1980 is very different from a manufacturer in 1940. Right now, companies are moving exponentially faster at adapting to younger workers than unions.
TL/DR:
Union membership is low in the US because young workers work in a gig economy and unions are overrun by Boomers who don't understand how to adapt to the changing times.

Because people are working too hard and for little money and crap benefits and you can get fired whenever if you don’t kiss ass or burn out….while prices go up, wages stay stagnant low.
I hope these workers keep fighting. They deserve so much better than the companies are willing to give them.
