Samsung’s new XR headset is here, but I’ll tell you a secret: Sammy may not expect you to buy it.

The Samsung Galaxy XR has officially launched. It’s the product of a massive collaboration between Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm, and it’s packed with impressive tech. In this video, I break down everything you need to know about this $1,799 device, from its powerful gaming capabilities to its two key differentiators: the brand new Android XR operating system and the deep, system-wide integration of Google’s Gemini AI.

But after attending the launch event, it was clear that this headset is just the beginning. I’ll explain why the Galaxy XR is likely a foundational product designed to pave the way for the real revolution: future smart glasses powered by Android XR.

50 thoughts on “Galaxy XR hands-on: This isn’t the real product

  1. I can't use smart glasses. I have amblyopia, and my right eye is the lazy eye. Until they either cure amblyopia (not likely anytime soon), or come out with a pair of smart glasses that support the left eye (not counting that either), VR/AR is my only option. I currently have a Meta Quest 3 and love it. I'm looking forward to something with a better FOV and better passthrough.

  2. Qualcomm is holding this thing back unfortunately. It can't handle 4k at 120 and even 90hz for that matter.

I hope meta releases that high fov model with the next chip, would be an easy buy then…

  3. Watching 360 video would be a primary use case. Exploring with Google Maps another primary use case since I do that already, just it will be much more immersive with the XR. I want to try out VR gaming, VR chat spaces, and VR world exploration. I'm not too sure about the audio solution they provide. I expect an $1,800 device to have premium audio to match the premium OLED displays. Those tiny laptop speakers aren't going to cut it.

  4. You said "what people actually wants", but smart glasses aren't what I want at all. Maybe 20 years in the future when they're actually feature complete. Right now they're a just as ugly but far more compromised device, and it will be for a long time. Yeah so maybe the full XR headsets are bulky and the comfort hasn't been solved yet, but is a comparatively more complete experience. If the killer app emerges, it'll be ready. I'm not so eager to have glasses that I can "wear outside" while still looking awfully dorky.

  5. Whoa.
Connecting controllers to the AVP actually IS straight-forward.
And what do you mean they don’t work well?

The PSVR2 controller compatibility is new. Are you saying you tried that and other controllers and they were all lacking?

    That seems unlikely.

    Smells like bias. 8:35

  6. Can Gemini continuously listen to a physical lecture while answering my questions in text (not to disturb anyone)? For example, “give me more examples of what the lecturer is talking about right now”. All without stopping to listen. And with awareness that the lecturer is not me (not a user), so that it doesn’t try talking to the lecturer.

The point is to use it in a moment and understand things on spot instead of postponing the moment of understanding to “afterwards”. Afterwards tends to never happen. And even if it happens – I don’t like an idea of trying to figure things out alone with AI. I prefer asking AI as the first line of help and then being able to immediately escalate any issue to a human presenter/lecturer for further clarification if needed.

And it’s not even about 2 independent instances of Gemini. It’s about the same instance being able to get input from non-users (people around) via voice + live video feed (not only hearing the lecturer, but also seeing the slides), continuously update context in near real time, while simultaneously communicating with the user via text without stopping to listen and update context. I would wear such a device every single day. Basically it’s about having AI in my head that sees what I see and hears what I hear and chatting with it via text in real time without saying a word aloud and disturbing anyone around me.

I believe passive listening and video feed for real time context updates + simultaneously getting text inputs from the user and giving text outputs is a killer feature that can make people addicted and justify using the headset more often than not.

  7. They never mention that “XR” stands for extended reality. That’s a pretty basic piece of context for the product. Hope the editorial filter improves next time.

  8. I pre-ordered the android XR headset, to complement my Apple Vision Pro to see the differences in polish and performance. But I’m not like the average person I own almost every popular VR headset that there is.

  9. As an apple Vision Pro owner,, it’s a niche product to say the least, but it’s very polished in what it does. It does need more software support and it will take time to get there, but if you count Apple out you’ve probably miscounted.

  10. 4K is 2160p, it's a 2D resolution not 1D, we only mention the shorter side (Vertical side) as a shorthand way to mention a resolution, just look at the quality options on this video, it says 2160p (4K), and 8K is 4320p (8K)
so a resolution of 3552p would be a little above 6K, we would typically call it 6K+.
The Apple Pro XDR Display which is advertised as 6K, is 3384p vertically.

Note: we mention the shorter (vertical) side of a resolution, because it's the side that remains constant while the ration changes, for example a standard 16:9 1080p screen would be (1080 x 1920). but an ultra wide 21:9 1080p screen would be (1080 x 2560). And in case the vertical side changes, like for example screens that are 16:10 they would be (1200 x 1920), this would be a different resolution, so we don't call it 1080p or HD, this becomes an HD+ screen.

Conclusion: so knowing all this, a square HD screen 1:1 would typically be (1080 x 1080), and a 4K would be (2160 x 2160) and a 6K would be (3384 x 3384), and an 8K would be (4320 x 4320). and since the Galaxy XR screens are not a perfect square, we got (3552 x 3840) which is a bit higher than to 6K but not 8K.

  11. Can you imagine the price of replacement prescription lenses that have built in AR tech in these future smart glasses. I replace my glasses every 2 years so this is going to be expensive…and for the XR headset I just don't see the real life everyday use of this to justify that price of $1799, plus the price of prescription lenses every 2 years, plus XR controllers, plus subscriptions to the AI Pro…Very, very expensive.

  12. At $1,799 you will need to buy additional lenses if you wear glasses, which means every 2 years with the change of your eye prescription glasses you need to buy your glasses and lenses for this headset…Very, very expensive. For headsets like this I think they should also make the device work with people who wear glasses or the device itself has built in eye correction. Devices like this have a long long way to go yet before they become more mainstream.

  13. I'll be waiting for Smart glasses. While I see the improvement in graphics and design, I don't see the need to pay more than what I paid for my Quest 3. I'm able to have productivity, leisure and gaming at sensible price with my Quest 3. Now I am holding off on the smart glasses in anticipation for Samsungs glasses to pair with my Z fold. I 'm excited about that eco system, so I hope it doesn't take too long.

  14. The designers should be fired at a minimum, sued at a maximum. Can someone, anyone, invent something that isn’t an apple knockoff? Ironically Samsung used to make products that had a unique style.

  15. Quest OS also is based on Android. And supports some of the Android apps.

I wish there was any info about the screen quality or how field of view feels instead of just talking about AI and google subscriptions.

  16. I think the VR headset is cool and all, but I was very disappointed that there was no announcement of Galaxy Glasses at this event. I want the Galaxy Glasses and Samsung can't launch them soon enough. I suppose I will buy the Meta Ray-Ban Displays now and hope I can get a good trade-in when Samsung finally gets the glasses on the market.

  17. To all the glazing apple sheeps and media journalists that like to come out of the woodworks to throw shade at Samsung without doing any research, Apple is certainly NOT the first for every device and certainly NOT the Last, Samsung did VR FIRST, With the Gear VR a decade ago and now they are Back with the new VR headset the Galaxy XR. Samsung did NOT copy apple.

  18. No, thanks. I'll get a combo of Xreal One/One Pro and Xreal Beam Pro instead. Even Rokid's AR Spatial bundle looks better value than this.

  19. We will see if Meta catches up. In many ways, VisionOS and this customized Android XR are seriously years ahead of Meta despite their head start. Meta fought so hard to have their head start and have a stake in the coming paradigm shift, but they want to steer customer habits and force integration into their Horizon ecosystem. It's going to drive many of us early adopters to alternatives as soon as possible. All of this is dystopian transhumanist acceleration regardless of company, but I particularly do not like Meta/DARPA.

  20. I will buy Galaxy XR after seeing real tests of PC Steam VR games. Apple Vision Pro did not natively support PC VR gaming so I didn't buy it. Galaxy XR has motion controllers and already mention PC VR gaming, if its a great experience then they got a buyer. However I am in Australia, they need to launch this product in more countries.
