Hello everybody and welcome back to the channel! Today we are looking at a nice 2011 Mazda RX8 with the 1.3L naturally aspirated non-turbocharged rotary engine. Customer stats that there is a check engine light on the dash and that it has a P2808 code. Customer has ordered and replaced the ECM on this vehicle since the diag tree for that particular code says clear the codes, test drive the vehicle, check for codes again and if it comes back replace ECM. So today we are going to go through some diagnosis and figure out what is exactly going on with this Mazda!

Spark plugs are removed from the wheel well. Leading and trailing plugs. This was so painful to watch…..You could have watched some YouTube videos which will show you how to change the spark plugs! Regarding the ECM, I sent my one off to a specialist for checking, as my car would not start exactly like your one. They charge a flat $180 even if there is nothing wrong or they cannot fix it…it's in their T&C.
greetings. I think it is easier to change the spark plugs if you do it by removing the left wheel and accessing from underneath.
Probably already know this Ray but they have a x2 leading and x2 trailing spark plugs. Each set are completely different 😂😂😂
revving it on first start before it's warm and turning it off before it's warm is exactly why these cars have problems in the first place. any rotary forum will tell you to warm it up first or you can damage the engine and cause flooding. Also, access the spark plugs through the driver side front wheel.
My mom always had the rotary Mazdas. They do take a little tranny to start sometimes. She sure loved her cars!!â¤â¤â¤

The procedure for this job is to jack up left side of the car, remove the front wheel & there's a little protective flap, once removed you can see the spark plugs through the hole, It's very easy when you do it that way. Getting the leads removed & plugged in is also much easier
I finally got this rotary started after hours of work, let me blow it up with some cold revving.
It is easier to replace the plugs on a rotary if you remove the front tire. Please obtain a maintenance manual before doing so.
It seems that every vehicle you work on is grey. Is that a Florida thing in addition to driving in the passing lane?

"Mazda people explain yourself." Okay – the plugs are easily accessible if you remove the front tire. You can see them and reach them without issue. Also they run pretty hot so that's why the boots don't want to come off. The recommendation is, because of the heat and failure, plugs, coils and wires should all be changed. Power is lost quickly in a rotary with a poor ignition system. They are quirky machines for sure but fun to drive. Also a flooded RX8 can be a bear to start sometimes.

Never seen someone try and start a car like that, you refuse to take no for an answer…That thing needs some snake oil or lizard liquid…
Ray, not sure if you knew but there it a leaving and treailing spark plug. They are different qnd important to be in the correct place

If you pull the tire the plugs are right there

In the day I had a Mazda RX3. I bought it in Florida when I was stationed in Key West. This was 1973. It had a rotary engine. Ran the daylights out of that engine. I loved the performance and durability of the car. Ran across country 5 times. If not for getting T-Boned I think I would still have tat car. Loved it.
1.3L Rotary.
Two rotors that only has 2 plugs.
A Liquid Piston Hybrid Cycle Rotary has 3 plugs.
That starter has to be hot as a branding iron….OMG Thx for sharing
That was not exhaust smoke coming out of the tailpipe, it is the smoke leaking out of the very very hot starter motor! LOL

looks like one of those cars you dang near have to pull the engine just to do a tune up! mazda probably has a special tool just for that engine weird they use 2 different plugs

There is a spot to put oil into the motor which helps build compression and it starts up. My boss owns one and he floods it out every now and then and has to pump a bunch of oil into it lol things are a pain!

The autos tend to have more problems, too. As you can't Rev it as high. Also have 60 less hp

This seems kind of hard to remove the plugs from the engine there has to be a easy way to do this?
THIS WHY OUR LABOR COST BE SO HIGH. TECHS DOING SHIT THE HARD WAY. 3 HOURS TH DO A 20 MINUTE SPARK PLUG CHANGE. TAKE THE TIRE OFF SIR. ALOT MORE ROOM DOWN THERE.
