Best Home Theater PC Software
In this video, I go over the best home theater software to load. I’ll be using two pieces of hardware Raspberry Pi and Intel NUC PC. I’ll be loaded two different systems depending on your needs. LibreELEC for those that just need KODI. Recalbox for those that want KODI and Game Emulation!

I've taken my old Dell Inspiron 14 3442 laptop (Intel Core i3-4005U, 8GB DDR3 RAM, 2TB SATA SSD) and turned it into a dedicated Kodi media center for my bedroom. I’ve recently installed LibreELEC on it and adjusted the settings to my liking. I’ve already copied my own DVD and Blu-ray rips of my favorite movies and TV shows from an external SSD to my LibreELEC library. I’ve also ordered a compatible remote control for my Dell laptop, which is connected to my Samsung M4500 Smart TV via a regular HDMI port. I also have a Vizio V20x-J8 Compact 2.0 Sound Bar connected to said TV via an HDMI ARC port. When it comes to watching my favorite movies and TV shows on the go, I now use the Kodi app on my Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE, which is the 12GB/256GB Wi-Fi version.
can you do hi end HTPC hardware and software as well Please?
what is your suggestion for all in one box. I need a support for AV1 and and TrueHD Atmos, DTS-X pass through and stream some Netflix, Disney+?
I've never gotten Kodi to do anything well, in any circumstance.
Is it a good idea to have a nuc as a how, theatre PC for a 7.1 surround sound ?
pro tip, you can wire a power button to the pi's gpio pins. 🙂
Update re your thoughts in this dept would be interesting, hardware/software. Been updates/changes re RP, vs mini PCs/NUC, nas. O/source Jellyfin (from) Emby, vs Plex. Automated with Sonarr, Radarr, Prowlarr, etc
I can’t load in any movies do I need to download them from somewhere
junk.
TOO FAST AND NOT ENOUGH EXPLANATION FOR NEWBIES
What’s a good way to quickly swap between Kodi and Netflix?
what os do u use
this guy has some dumb conspiracy theories
Resbary pi 4 do not support true HD dts HD passthrou
So uh what if you have windows? Is it more straight forward than not knowing what the hell you are doing lol
any suggested remote control and wifi for the HTPC Kodi? nice to have it wireless as well as using a remote from the sofa. Thanks!
For 4K running in Kodi, neither the NUC nor the Pi4 are good options. Windows Kodi does not have HDR and the Pi is grossly underpowered. The better option is the Nvidia shield and the best option is the Odriod N2.
osmc and jellyfin…
you cant say best htpc without bigbox
WHY ARE YOU USING WINDOWS!! I was watching this and suddenly I saw some Microsoft shit I immediately a closed the tab. Phew.
Installing mint stick on arch allows you to format usb drives and flash all kinds of images in just one click and its significantly faster than etcher, just saying that is an option in case someone doesnt feel like using the terminal
How about instead of an Xbox 360 controller, I use a Wii remote??? It’s only natural that I use a relatively modern controller that resembles a TV remote. No pointer functionality I’m sure, but that wouldn’t bother me too much, since I stink at aiming for stuff sometimes anyway with the Wii remote.
Does Raspberry Pi 4 support multi channel audio from HDMI? I have a 5.1 system and I want to make the most out of it.
LOL, i found "Universal USB Installer" yesterday, it says it comes from linux pendrives also and it also looks like your "YUMI", i think it is the same program (i ran it from tech tools store under win 10).
funny thing we found that almost at the same time… it got added to the store tool recently…. and you can even install a windows to go along with all the other OSes, just scroll down to windows and pick it… or you can go with just the installation medium, or both ^^
it's cool. but i need a bigger usb thumbdrive first ^^
Kodi DS Player with MadVR, hands down the best media center solution (stutter free playback, HDR, ….. MadVR kills the rest here).
Only downside is that you are stuck with Kodi 17 as the DSPlayer fork isn't maintained anymore, and the core Kodi team refused to merge the DSPlayer component. :'(
Rpi + kodi + emulation station + steamlink
The ads man.
Are you and Greg Gutfeld the same person?
I like your approach to this… Good job
BTW Chris Titus Tech, here is an idea for a video that just popped into my mind. Let's give Artem S. Tashkinov some well needed love and discuss some serious Linux problems (or perceived problems that are actually not that big of a deal) in a future video. He's been doing his list for over 10 years at this point and while some of his points are not that relevant (alternative solutions may exist that mitigate or completely invalidate his points; some problems only exist on certain hardware), other points are spot on.
You can find his "Linux desktop sucks" list here: http://itvision.altervista.org/why.linux.is.not.ready.for.the.desktop.current.html
Great video. Any chance you could do a walk through / update on this? https://www.smarthomebeginner.com/docker-home-media-server-2018-basic/ I keep getting lots of permissioning errors when trying to integrate the dockers.
Only peasants would put anything other than an i9 9900T in their HTPC build ;-).
I don't think it support 4K HDR HEVC x265. Also linux do not support Netflix 1080p.
Mine won't boot after writing the image to my flash drive. I'm using an old ASUS g74sx laptop
I'd like some info about the controller and it's receiver.
Oh boy, at 4:48 you type status=progress, i haven't had a need to see latest versions of dd and its man page for a decade+ so i was trying to check the disk rights from another proccess, even put it inside a screen and play with STDOUT and SIGNAL, man THAT is a life-saver, and i also need to check all the terminal commands i use everyday, i'm behind :-/ 😛
I'd like to coment on 4:26 if there is a way like in mac os uses disks, that you can choose disk2 as rdisk2 with the "r" that uses the hardware in a different matter, people say faster more reliable. If you know anything please share.
Really love your videos, Chris.
Looking forward to more videos that introduces some cool stuff
Also, i hope there's some videos dive deeply into some specific topics
A video about Syncthing would be good. Using it now to sync files over devices. Works good.
Hmmmm… So you're using Vivaldi ðŸ˜
I would use the Odroid-N2 with CoreElec over the Raspberry Pi 4 if you want a nice standalone kodi experience. You won't have to buy heatsink either or a case that acts like one as the whole bottom has a heatsink.
I hate kodi… It's like trying to navigate a video game console menu or a cable box. You're just making more work for yourself setting it up and using it.
Just pop a storage drive in a USB dock, nemo will pop up, search for the movie or show you want to watch and double click it. DONE!
Cris, is it possible with a 7.1 sound motherboard and a sound card 7.1 simulate surround (Dolby Atmos or Dts-x) using both?
ddrescue / gddrescue has been my go-to for a few years, now. Ymmv.
Chris, how about a you playing Megaman/Castlevania/Mario/Donkey Kong stream on Twitch? Great games! Who needs more than 1 MB for an enjoyable game, right?
Why am I not surprised at all that Chris is a movie/tv-show storage junkie? (I am one myself) How can I tell? Look in the upper-right corner which shows the movies, for the "a*" and "b*" alone there were a lot of titles. Of course he has most of the DC- and Marvel-movies and a the well known sf-movies. 🙂 Now I want to know if he also has a lot of manga on it. I noticed that he also has Top Gun, I watched that movie again a few years ago, oddly it hasn't aged a bit, it doesn't feel old to me.
