This video goes over the infamous LCARS System 47 Screensaver on Linux. You have seen it in my background and now I show how to use an old 90s screensaver scr file on Linux. I then show how to make a systemd service to activate the screensaver when you are idle for a set amount of time.

Nice!
So I guess you're saying that I'm never going to have a screen saver in linux.. cool.
I don't understand why the Linux community has a fear of GUI's.. but they need to get over it and stop leaving their distros incomplete. When it takes this much developer level code writing just to have a screen saver.. Your OS is incomplete. This is why Windows has over 70% of the pc market, and they always will… and it makes me sad.

I know this is old, but on the website I noticed that your command to run the screensaver used single quotes instead of double quotes, meaning the expansion of $HOME fail.
Sir, could you show how to do it using the bottles program for linux? I have many windows screensavers I'd like to use.
Wow, thanks for featuring System 47!!! Very honored 🙂
Full Guide link not working. Says it can't be found? Disappointing 🙁
Unfortunately does not work on Raspberry Pi – because WINE requires x86 and does not work on ARM for this
My screen saver requires me to have Adobe Flash Player ActiveX to be installed first. Guess I'm boned because that player has seen it's 'end of life'.
Thank you!
Looks great. Have you done any themes for LCARS in Linux? I am sure a lot of trekkies would love to have a LCARS interface.
I would love to know how to run this with no audio.
my pc is showing sudo: /etc/systemd/system/: command not found
what should i do??
Tried that on Pop os, but when I check the status fo the service it tells me "bash[6154]: No protocol specified" and "bash[6154]: couldn't open display"
I just ran the ".exe" in my default wine bottle and run the ".scr" file manually whenever I want it. Way easier! Works perfectly!
If you don't know about it, there is LCARS 24 which was a DOS (windows beta) program. It runs great in DOSBox. You extract all the files to the folder and run it in 800×600 or 1024×768 modes. I prefer 800×600. This is a great video, especially for those Star Trek fans who would like to have an LCARS system running. Thank you.
Hi Chris, anyway to configure this Screensaver without any sounds?
Chris, changing the IDLE_TIME does not affect when the screensaver activates.
NO difference between:
IDLE_TIME=$((5*60*1000))
And
IDLE_TIME=$((5*1000)).
Any idea what is going on?
you mention that a lot of people would have a fit over this, and i ask "why", it's enjoyable fun and nostalgic.. i'm with you on this, it's a lot of fun!
Thanks for the video! I've been wondering if there's a screensaver that shows what's going on with your Internet connection or inside your computer.
Has anyone created LCARS interface for Linux like windows?
Chris Titus Tech im guessing the cmatrix is done in the same fashion?
Sweet!, thanks. Wish there was a "GOOD" actual LCARS user shell instead of screensaver similar to lcarsx32 project.. is that still going? lol
LOVE IT! I remember decking out my Win 9x (and sometimes XP) systems with full LCARS programs and having alot of fun. Thank you very much for this video.
I had this screensaver back when I got my 1st iMac G5 in 2004. It's been many years since I had a Mac. I loved this screensaver. It was so cool!!! After several years running windows pc I got the itch to get another iMac. Its pretty identical to the white IMac I had in 2004 to 2006 but Metallic silver. Anyways, one of the first things I tried to load was this screen saver and I got the error that the screensaver wouldn't install… 'You can't open the application "System47 v2.21for OSX Installer" because PowerPC applications are no longer supported. I did find this site that I downloaded this from years ago but apparently the site has been abandoned. Has anyone running OSX find a way around this?
Hey Chris, what distro and DE are you using here? If I had to guess I would say the Awesome WM version of Manjaro…. Am I close?
Cool, but is there an actual LCARS Desktop?
