Today I am removing EVERYTHING from inside the Farmall MD transmission and rear end. First the axles and axle housings are coming off, then the bull gears, bull pinion assemblies, differential, and all the transmission gears and shafts.

I usually cross reference original bearing numbers to a comparable brand or updated part number. I have had luck finding NOS Timken, SKF, and New Departure bearings on ebay. Regardless I also re use what I can, easy to spend $600 or more to get all new bearings.

Where do you buy ball bearings? My SuperM has the rear countershaft bearing that isn't great, but I'm having trouble finding one. Thanks

You are fortunate. A lot of M rear end cases are busted by one of the bull gears from ball bearings failing and falling out and getting wedged between the bull gear and the case. My dad said that the Super M rear end case had more clearance so that would not happen and they had roller bearings instead of ball bearings. I am not sure if he was right about that but that is what he told me.
I absolutely love your videos. I have a small problem though.. Can I suggest you label your vids moving forward with season #'s and video #'s.

you remind me of my foster dad many years ago. they took me out of the city and onto a farm. at first I hated it the smells the work and the hours never had time for anything. after 3 years there I gained so much respect for him his wife and farmers in general. he taught me so many different things from welding to milking and feeding using a log splitter just so much. the knowledge and hard work you have is incredible. you are definitely a YouTube favorite

Is that a QT-54 Quincy compressor? Hows it performing for ya? Considering getting myself one. The unfortunate part is it's gone up $400 in the past 2 yrs.
Pete, thanks for your talk at the end. I was thinking that I would want to replace all the bearings (not that I am any sort of a mechanic) but I follow your logic completely and see why you are keeping them. Makes sense!

Can you imagine what engineering it took to build the 1st one and to get all the gearing, bearing sizes and clearances just right?! Back when these were made there were no computers, just smart people! Thanks for a great video! I smashed the LIKE button.
Could you spend a little time explaining and analyzing the bushing at the front end of the PTO shaft. I have had my shaft out and the shaft end is scuffed up. Do you think it would be possible to replace that bushing through the PTO shaft hole. I can barely reach it with my fingers. Thanks, Ellis

Ihc made their own bearings for all there tractors
This has got to be easier to source parts than the front half last year assuming that most of the back half is the same as a straight M whereas the front is much more rare. Good luck sir.

I did that once upon a time and swapped in the gears from an I 6. I got a lower 1st gear and a higher 4th. You might be able to find such gears in an O6. If you can find a junk one. The lower first was handier for baling and such. The higher 4th made it easier to start heavy loads on the road then shift to high. Now's the time!
Pete HOW in the world did you get all your knowledge on each an ever part to dessemble an know each an every part, an then to reassemble a TOTAL tractor???

I'm not sure if you watched the part of the series on the Suicide Awareness Farmall H where it had taken me three separate attempts at getting the countershaft/hydraulic coupler nut off… But man you ain't kidding. The one on my M came free easily. The one on the H… She was destined for the scrap bin. Also – there is a drain plug in the front of the transmission to drain that front quadrant of oil. I believe it is about a 3/8" pipe plug.
Man, it's awfully sweet to see that someone else does it right. Matter of fact, it's awfully sweet to see someone else doing it! I did my 45+ years, and am glad to be retired from it now. These days, I just share knowledge. Thanks Pete! I'm Jim.

I work on my own car, do most repairs and replacements, BUT all those gears and bearings look the same – one after another. I'd have to number them to keep them in order, and lay them down sequentially – and nobody better touch or kick a part out of line, or they'd be mixed up for sure.

In the video where one of your herd died, you mentioned that you'd compost the carcass. I was wondering, do you cut it up and debone it and then add it to the compost pile? Do you do the same procedure to any animal that dies (vs. being butchered)? If not how do you dispose of these animals?

I've been a mechanic for the better part of my life and it never ceases to amaze me how brilliant the men and women were who came up with the very first designs for these things. Great video pete! It's awesome seeing these old pieces of history restored and cared for. Can't wait to see what's next!
